A Legacy of Faith and Fellowship
Featured in New Mexico Influence Magazine in an article titled “The Understated Influence of the Black Church in Alamogordo,” along with a network of Black pastors—including Reverend James E. Forney of Corinth Baptist Church, Pastor Warren Robinson (since retired) of Owen Chapel AME, and Pastor Mark Anthony Phillips of Holy Temple Church of God in Christ - together they form a spiritual coalition rooted in service, inclusion, and evolution.
Walker leads the New Covenant Worship Center, a vibrant congregation located on Thunder Road.
These community churches, some nearly a century old, have long served as sanctuaries of hope and hubs of activism. Corinth Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend James E. Forney, for example, stands on the historic site of the former Corinth School, once a segregated institution for Black children. Today, it is a beacon of ministry and outreach, shedding light across Alamogordo and beyond.
Owen Chapel AME, founded in 1939, is was led for 2 decades by Pastor Robinson (retired), his inclusive preaching style and community services when active, earned him accolades like the President George Bush Call to Service Award and the Office of African American Affairs Everyday Hero Award. He now serves as a Alamogordo City Commissioner providing government service but with a reminder of faith.
Holy Temple Church of God in Christ. in Alamogordo, New Mexico, has a rich and deeply rooted history dating back to 1924. It was originally founded between two houses on West 17th Street by Mother Ella Jackson and Elder L.R. Malone. This humble beginning marked the start of what would become one of the most enduring and influential Black churches in the region. Now led by Pastor Mark Anthony Phillips, a respected spiritual leader his ministry is rooted in both tradition and service, reflecting the enduring influence of the Black church in the region.
Walker Spreading a Message with Non-Traditional Outreach
Walker is one who has most engaged the use of social media, partnering with KALHRadio.org, NewMexicoConservativeNews.com and AlamogordoTownNews.org for weekly bite sized "Introspections" to expand his reach to a younger generation. He understands how to reach an expanded audience with modern day technology to reach where people are outside the doors of a church.
Walker’s story is one of resilience, leadership, and unwavering faith. The Black church, long a cornerstone of spiritual and social progress for all of Alamogordo, well beyond the Black community, continues to shape the cultural and civic landscape of Alamogordo and southern New Mexico.
Pastor Walker is viewed by many as the next generation of Black pastoral leadership in Alamogordo. His approach is technologically progressive, blending tradition with innovation. His bitsized messages stream weekly on KRAZY KALHRadio.org, are syndicated through various platforms, and are featured on his YouTube channel, where titles like “Don’t Look Down”, “What Now?”, and “Dream Slayers” have become spiritual touchstones.
In “Don’t Look Down,” Walker urges listeners to rise above fear and embrace divine purpose. “What Now?” challenges the community to move beyond political division and toward collective healing. And “Dream Slayers” confronts the voices—internal and external—that discourage ambition and growth.
These messages resonate not just with church goers but with educators, civic leaders, and everyday residents seeking clarity and courage.
A Ministry of Inclusion and Service
Walker’s sermons often echo a central theme: “We must get outside our church walls, hit the streets, and remind folks there is still an answer—there is hope.” His ministry is one of movement, not monument. He collaborates with fellow pastors on food drives, youth mentorship, and civic engagement, embodying the ethos of service that defines Alamogordo’s Black church community.
As the crosses carried by the civil rights generation are passed to the shoulders of this generation, Walker and his peers are evolving with the faithful. Their influence may be understated, but it is undeniable and needed in today's modern society.
In a city that segregated its schools until 1950, and now celebrates its diversity, Pastor Johnnie Walker and his fellow pastors of faith, represent both history and hope. His voice, along with the others mentioned—whether echoing through a sanctuary, a podcast, or a YouTube sermon—is a call to action, a balm for the weary, and a reminder that faith, when paired with service, can transform a community.
