What’s there to do in Alamogordo this weekend? The arts, volunteerism, ride for a cause, shop downtown, see a firefighter compete, Car Show, Cinco de Mayo and More…

Let’s start Friday with a stroll down New York Avenue and shop local at Roadrunner Galleria, Blush Salon with Clothes Jewelry and More, hear Ghost tales at Victoria, take a class at ClayTime Pottery, visit Mia’s Collectibles for antiques then walk or drive by 1209 New York Avenue and see the curious root art exhibits outside and cool lighting after dark.

Then Friday evening it’s a must do to visit the free public reception on Friday, May 3, 5 - 7 PM and see the Works of Joseph Roy Willis (1876-1960) and other WPA artists at Otero Artspace, 1118 Indiana and 12th Street just two short blocks walking off of New York Avenue.

Otero Arts will celebrate the 87th anniversary of the opening of the Alamogordo Women’s Club in May at Otero Artspace. In 2019, Otero Arts leased the historic building, constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) at 1118 Indiana Ave. in Alamogordo, and has been holding monthly art exhibitions as well as concerts, workshops, literary events, and community meetings at the venue, now known as Otero Artspace.

This celebration will see the return of J.R. Willis’ landscapes, on loan from Otero County, which were part of the opening exhibition and reception for the Women’s Club in May 1937. The exhibit will feature the Willis paintings and reproductions of WPA art from the collection of the New Mexico National New Deal Preservation Association. During the Great Depression, New Mexican artists created murals, paintings, sculpture and buildings as part of the New Deal/WPA workforce. The opening reception is May 3rd at the Otero Artspace, 1118 Indiana Avenue, from 5 – 7pm. Gallery hours are Thursdays through Sundays (ending May 26th) from 1 – 4pm.

Then Saturday begin your day volunteering. Either volunteer by catching up with the community gardening organization With Many Hands Alamogordo for a La Luz Creek Cleanup Day project. Be sure to wear a hat and sunglass if you will need them, and children are welcome to come help with adult supervision. Meet up at 164 Labocita Canyon in La Luz to help clean up…
