ALAMOGORDO, New Mexico — The City of Alamogordo is warning motorists of two separate infrastructure projects set to impact local traffic in mid-January 2026, including temporary lane closures this week and a larger intersection improvement project beginning next week.
First, from Wednesday, January 14, through Friday, January 16, the outside lanes on East 10th Street and New York Avenue will be closed to accommodate construction related to the installation of a new HAWK (High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk) traffic signal system at the intersection of E. 10th Street and New York Avenue. The work involves drilling for new arm bars to support the pedestrian-activated signal.
Access to New York Avenue will remain open during the closures. The HAWK system, designed to enhance pedestrian safety, operates on a demand basis rather than a constant cycle:
• Flashing Yellow — Activated by a pedestrian push button; drivers should slow down and prepare to stop.
• Solid Yellow — Pedestrians wait; drivers prepare to stop.
• Solid Double Red — Drivers must stop; pedestrians may begin crossing.
• Flashing Red — Drivers stop; pedestrians complete crossing; drivers may proceed if the way is clear.
• No Lights (Blank) — Normal flow; drivers proceed without stopping.
City officials urge drivers and pedestrians to exercise extra caution during this transitional period as the community adjusts to the new signal sequence.
The second project, a more extensive undertaking, begins Monday, January 19, 2026, at the intersection of White Sands Boulevard and Fairgrounds Road. Awarded to Rock Canyon Construction for $2,036,344, the “White Sands Boulevard / Fairgrounds Road Traffic Signal” project includes installing new waterlines, building a concrete intersection, adding a left-turn lane for access to the Fairgrounds Commercial Subdivision, constructing ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, and installing new traffic signals.
Traffic impacts during the project include a reduced speed limit of 25 mph in the construction zone (down from 45 mph). In the initial phase, traffic will be shifted to the outside lanes while crews work in the center of the intersection. Left turns from southbound White Sands Boulevard onto Fairgrounds Road will be prohibited during this time.
Motorists are advised to use caution, obey all traffic control devices, and allow extra time for travel to ensure the safety of both the public and construction workers.
Both announcements were issued by the City of Alamogordo’s Public Information Office on Friday, January 9, 2026.
