Alamogordo, NM — Former Mayor Susan Payne by coincidence joined the flight for the Thursday send-off for a group of veterans on a Rio Grande Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., describing the experience as deeply moving as she witnessed local heroes receiving long-overdue recognition.
In comments shared with Alamogordo Town News, Payne expressed her enthusiasm: “It was exciting to see the two individual veterans from Alamogordo and the others be able to be recognized with this honor.” She witnessed the delegation send off part of the journey, highlighting the community’s ongoing commitment to honoring those who served.
The two Alamogordo veterans on this trip are Chris Hall and Lucio Vazquez, both Vietnam-era veterans. Hall served in the U.S. Army as a Specialist 4 (E-4) Still Photographer from 1972–1975, while Vazquez served as a Staff Sergeant (E-5) and helicopter crew chief with the 101st Airborne Division from 1967–1969, including surviving a helicopter crash during the Battle of Hamburger Hill.
The Honor Flight participants departed for the nation’s capital to visit memorials, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, fulfilling personal goals for many of the veterans. These trips, organized by Rio Grande Honor Flight, are provided at no cost to the veterans through community donations and volunteers.
The group is scheduled to return on Saturday, April 25, 2026, with arrival at Patron’s Hall (1106 N. New York Ave.) around 6:45–7:00 PM for a public “Welcome Home Our Heroes” celebration starting at 7:00 PM. Organizers from the U.S. Veterans MC Trinity Chapter and New Mexico Patriot Guard Riders, supported by local law enforcement, will provide a flag-line escort. The community is encouraged to attend with American flags, banners, and patriotic spirit to honor these veterans.
This event continues Alamogordo’s strong tradition of supporting Honor Flights, with past welcomes drawing significant local participation. For more information, visit riograndehonorflight.org.
Alamogordo Town News will provide coverage of the heroes’ return. Let’s show up and give Chris Hall, Lucio Vazquez, and all the participants the hero’s welcome they deserve!

Jeeses Chryst Edwards . . . take a MIDOL will ya?
Chris, thank you for yet another example of great local investigative journalism!
I'll ask around to see if other folks can add more information and evidence to help answer the questions you have raised.
Thanks again!

regarding the dispute involving employees at the public owned golf course: authoritarians/conservatives hate unions passionately - they are altogether too independent to fit in with their plans for more complete control. besides, authoritarians need to control patronage to extend their grip.
Absolutely true! If it wasn't for unions, a large portion of democrat politicians would lose a source of income . Thank you for bringing that up!
So glad that overweight lady who trots out a PhD as if it's a driver's license to take over our lives . . . is out the door. Get a real job now? Teaching probably.
another fringe candidate with considerable experience and background, who fails to grasp the underlying problems for manufacturing in our country. for decades, investors have been shuttering mills/mines/production/assembly lines, and moving off-shore to take advantage of cheaper labor
True. When 300 dollar shoes cost a dollar to make in China…
Sheriff Yazza for the win.
viewed from a wider scale - this is just another case of hard-ball politics within the republican establishment, the same conditions exist all the way up to the white house.
democracy is so 20th century...get with the program, authoritarianism is the new gold standard of the party.
True. What happened at the Otero County Democrat Party again?
Thank You Alamogordo Police Department. Lock Him Up And Throw Away the Key!!! Let's Kick His Family Out Of Here Too!!
Well, if we stay in the theme of mudslinging, it’s a horrible thing that this is happening in Otero county. Perhaps its time fir a regime change in the sheriffs office.
Great History lesson on a one-of-a-kind facility and its importance to the nation's security, and fuels our local economy.
As a student aide working there in 1978, I was in awe of the work, the people and the technology at the time. I was so lucky to be able to work with not only the surveyors, one of which was **** Golly, and also work with the dam setters which included Mr. Coyazo, Mr. Baca, Mr.
