Tularosa Activates Emergency Water Distribution; No Contamination Detected Boil Water Advisory Precautionary Not Contamination Detected

Village clarifies precautionary advisory, begins hauling potable water from Holloman Air Force Base

TULAROSA — The Village of Tularosa confirmed Friday that its water system contains no detected contamination as it activated emergency water distribution in response to a precautionary boil water advisory issued August 7 as required by the state when blending water from other water suppliers. 

The advisory, optional for residents to boil water before consumption, does not indicate the presence of pathogens or bacterial contamination in the municipal system. Instead, it represents a standard regulatory precaution following low-pressure conditions that occurred when water restrictions began Monday, August 3 and the blending of water from additional sources such as Holloman. 

“Our water treatment plant has not been contaminated,” the Village stated in a clarification released to residents. “This is a precautionary measure, not because contamination has been detected in our system.”

Emergency Response Underway

The Village began distributing potable water at the North side entrance of the Community Center (1050 N Bookout Rd) on Friday. Distribution continues through the weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

As of Friday, August 7, the Village commenced hauling potable water from Holloman Air Force Base to supplement its supply. These efforts will continue as long as needed, with officials anticipating resolution within the week.

“We will conduct special monitoring to ensure that the system is free of microbial contamination,” the Village said in its advisory. “In addition, we will inform you when you no longer need to boil your water.”

Precautions for Residents

Until the advisory is lifted, residents must boil water before:
• Drinking or cooking
• Preparing fruits and vegetables
• Washing dishes
• Making ice
• Providing water to pets or infants
Bottled water remains an alternative for all uses.

Addressing Misinformation

Village officials have emphasized the importance of accurate information as social media speculation about the cause of the advisory has circulated through the community.

“Misinformation only creates unnecessary fear and makes it more difficult for everyone working hard to resolve this situation,” the Village stated.

Residents are urged to share official notices rather than speculation, particularly with vulnerable populations including those in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses that may not have received direct notices.
