Mayor Sharon McDonald invites motivated high school students to join MYAC and shape the city’s future
Alamogordo is opening doors to its next generation of civic leaders. Mayor Sharon McDonald has launched the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC), an initiative designed to give students grades 8–12 a meaningful voice in municipal governance and community decision-making.
The commission represents the city’s commitment to youth engagement, inviting young people to advise the mayor on pressing issues affecting their generation while gaining firsthand experience in how local government operates. According to the program’s mission, MYAC embodies three core principles: Your Voice. Your City. Your Future.
Why High School Students Should Apply
Members of MYAC will develop valuable skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Participants can expect to:
• Build essential leadership and communication abilities
• Gain insight into municipal government operations and policy-making
• Earn verified community service hours
• Strengthen college applications, scholarship opportunities, and job prospects
• Make a tangible, positive impact on their local community
“This is an opportunity for young people to become part of the solution,” the initiative emphasizes, positioning MYAC as a platform for youth-led civic participation.
Who Can Join?
The commission welcomes all Alamogordo students in grades 8–12 who are passionate about their community. Applicants need not have prior political or government experience—only curiosity, commitment, and a desire to represent the diverse voices of Alamogordo’s youth.
Students interested in leadership, public service, local policy, or community issues are particularly encouraged to apply.
