Alamogordo, NM – A fire broke out early this morning at the McDonald’s South location, leading to a temporary closure of the popular fast-food spot. The incident, which occurred in the heart of the community, has drawn a swift response from city officials, emergency services, and local partners. While the cause remains under investigation, city leaders are prioritizing safety, support for the business, and opportunistic improvements to nearby infrastructure

Mayor Sharon McDonald released a detailed statement addressing the situation, emphasizing community impact, gratitude for responders, and steps toward recovery. Her full statement is as follows:

“On This morning, our community learned of a fire at the McDonald’s South location. McDonald’s has been a longstanding part of our community, and we recognize that even a temporary closure can affect the daily routines of many residents who rely on it as a quick, familiar stop throughout the day.

First and foremost, we are grateful that no injuries have been reported. A fire investigation will now take place, which is a standard part of the process following any incident of this type.

The City is working closely with the property owner, Mr. Ramsey, to ensure that the necessary steps are taken so the business can safely return to operation as soon as possible. I will also be reaching out to Mr. Ramsey directly to offer the City’s support as they work through repairs and the process of reopening.

Our Acting City Manager, Dr. Stephanie Hernandez, informed the Commission early this morning and has been coordinating with staff to respond proactively. Because the restaurant will be temporarily closed, the City is also taking the opportunity to complete important infrastructure work in the area. Our Utilities Department is currently working on waterline replacement in front of the business to improve water service reliability for McDonald’s and the surrounding businesses. Crews and our contractor, General Hydronics Utilities, have been working extended hours, and we will do everything possible to complete this work while the restaurant is closed to minimize additional inconvenience to our citizens.

We understand that when any of our local businesses must close, even temporarily, it affects employees, customers, and the broader rhythm of our community. I have been told that repairs and restoration could potentially take up to two weeks; however, we remain hopeful the work can be completed sooner. Our goal is to support a safe reopening while also making improvements that will benefit the area and the businesses that serve our residents every day.

I want to extend my sincere appreciation to the Alamogordo Police Department for quickly securing the area and ensuring public safety, and to our Alamogordo Fire Department for their swift response and professionalism in containing the fire and minimizing damage. We are fortunate to have such a highly skilled and well-trained fire department serving our community.

We also want to thank Jeremy from Otero County OES and Chief Rodriguez from High Rolls, who responded to support our city and stand alongside our local responders during the incident. Their partnership and willingness to assist reflect the strong cooperation that exists among our regional emergency services

In the meantime, Alamogordo is fortunate to have many outstanding local businesses throughout our city. I encourage our residents to continue supporting our local establishments, as they all depend on our community’s strength and support.”

The fire was contained quickly, thanks to the coordinated efforts of local fire and police departments, with additional assistance from regional partners. No details on the fire’s origin have been released pending the investigation, but officials have confirmed that damage was minimized, allowing for a potentially expedited repair process.

Acting City Manager Dr. Stephanie Hernandez has been at the forefront of the response, ensuring that the closure is leveraged for essential upgrades. The ongoing waterline replacement by the Utilities Department and contractor General Hydronics Utilities aims to enhance reliability for the area, reducing the risk of future service interruptions.

Residents and employees affected by the closure are encouraged to patronize other local eateries and businesses in Alamogordo. The community’s resilience and support for one another remain key as the city works toward a full reopening.

This event underscores the importance of emergency preparedness and inter-agency collaboration in Otero County. Updates will be provided as the investigation and repairs progress.”

As Alamogordo rallies around its affected business of McDonalds and first responders, this incident serves as a reminder of the unbreakable spirit that defines our town. With collaborative efforts underway to restore McDonald’s South swiftly and safely, residents are urged to show their support by visiting the other McDonald’s location. Together, we not only rebuild from damage but strengthen the bonds that make our community thrive—proving once again that in times of challenge, Alamogordo stands united, caring and resilient.
