Alamogordo, NM – As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day approaches on Monday, January 19, 2026, the Alamogordo community is gearing up for its annual tradition of honoring Dr. King’s legacy through a peaceful march and gathering focused on unity, nonviolence, and service.

Organized by volunteers of the local Dr. Martin Luther King Committee being led by Rev. (retired) and city Commissioner Warren Robinsonand, this year’s events carry the theme “Mission Possible II: Building Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way,” echoing Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community.

The day begins with the MLK Freedom March at 10:00 a.m., starting in the parking lot of Lowe’s Grocery Store near 10th Street. Participants will proceed down 10th Street to New York Avenue, then along New York Avenue to 12th Street, and finally up 12th Street to Maryland Avenue, concluding at the historic Dudley School Community Center.

The march welcomes residents of all ages, along with schools, churches, civic groups, local bands, ROTC cadets, veterans, and faith-based organizations. Attendees are encouraged to carry respectful, family-friendly banners featuring quotes from Dr. King or local leaders who embody courage, compassion, and community service.

Following the march, activities continue at the Dudley School Community Center on Maryland Avenue starting at 11:00 a.m. and running until 2:00 p.m. The program includes educational displays, guest speakers, proclamations, and networking opportunities. A special march-style luncheon will feature sacked lunches reminiscent of those prepared for civil rights marchers in Dr. King’s era (available in limited quantities, with outdoor food vendors possible as alternatives).

These events reflect Alamogordo’s longstanding commitment to commemorating Dr. King. Past marches have varied in route and timing—some starting at Alameda Park and ending at landmarks like the Airborne Monument on White Sands Boulevard, others from the Boys and Girls Club to City Hall—but the spirit of unity has remained constant

Previous gatherings often featured mayoral proclamations, performances by local artists and speeches emphasizing voting rights and nonviolent change. Othersbseeking more information or to join contact organizers as featured in the poster below...
