Cloudcroft, N.M. — December 16, 2025
The Otero County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in recovering several pieces of heavy equipment stolen from the area of 3217 U.S. Highway 82. The theft, reported on November 29 at approximately 3:00 a.m., has raised alarm among local contractors and residents who rely on such machinery for infrastructure and development projects.
Details of the Theft
Deputies confirmed that the following items were taken:
• 2023 Gator Made Inc. Tilt Trailer – 16’ x 6’, VIN: 3707, License Plate: 88626TRL
• 2021 Ditch Witch VP30 Tracked Cable Plow – Serial Number: 0300
• 2022 John Deere 35G Mini Excavator – Serial Number: 7615
The Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident, with Deputy Justin Mitchell leading the case. Authorities are urging anyone with information to call 575-437-2210.
Community Impact
Heavy equipment theft is more than a property crime—it disrupts livelihoods. Contractors in Otero County note that machinery like the John Deere 35G mini excavator is essential for roadwork, utility installation, and small-scale construction. Losing access to such equipment can delay projects, increase costs, and strain already tight schedules.
Local business owners also worry about the broader implications. “When equipment like this disappears, it’s not just the owner who suffers,” said one contractor. “It slows down jobs, impacts workers, and can even affect public services if projects stall.”
Broader Context
Rural counties across New Mexico have seen a rise in equipment thefts in recent years, often linked to organized groups targeting high-value machinery that can be resold or transported across state lines. Law enforcement agencies emphasize that trailers and tracked plows are particularly vulnerable because they can be moved quickly and disguised with altered serial numbers.
Call for Vigilance
The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging residents and contractors to secure equipment with GPS tracking devices, lockable trailers, and well-lit storage areas. Community vigilance remains critical: neighbors who notice unusual activity around construction sites or rural properties are urged to report it immediately.
