Alamogordo, NM — Residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Earth Day 2026 with a family-friendly event at the Alameda Park Zoo on Saturday, April 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This annual gathering highlights conservation, education, and community engagement in the heart of the Tularosa Basin.
The theme for this year’s event aligns with the global “Our Power, Our Planet” focus, emphasizing renewable energy, sustainability, and collective action to protect the environment. Organizers from the City of Alamogordo Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the Otero County Master Gardeners and zoo staff, have planned a full day of activities.
Highlights of the Day Include:
• Butterfly Release — A signature moment where locally raised butterflies take flight, symbolizing renewal and habitat conservation. The zoo has coordinated with local schools for this educational experience.
• Appearances by Smokey the Bear and Dolly — Meet these iconic figures and learn about wildfire prevention and forest stewardship.
• Swainson’s Hawk Encounter — Get up close with a live bird of prey and discover raptor conservation efforts.
• Live Reptile Show — Engaging demonstrations showcasing native and exotic species found in the region.
• Hands-on activities for kids, live zookeeper talks, animal demonstrations, and opportunities to meet local conservationists.
• Informational booths on environmental initiatives, native plants, recycling, and sustainable living.
The event coincides with the Legacy of Liberty Air Show at Holloman Air Force Base on April 18–19, creating a “massive weekend” for Alamogordo. Families can enjoy conservation-focused fun at the zoo in the morning and head to the air show afterward. Zoo Manager Kate Maes and her team have been planning since August 2025 to coordinate logistics, animal care, and staffing for a smooth experience.
Proceeds from the Earth Day celebration support the 2026 Junior Zookeeper Camp, which provides hands-on learning opportunities for young animal enthusiasts in the community.
