A Growing Tradition of Service and Healing

What began as a small memorial ride has become one of Alamogordo’s most meaningful annual veteran events.

The Slate Riders were founded by Lynn Kimball (a guest panelist at last month’s Voices of Alamogordo Community Forum) in memory of her son, Slate Kimball, who died by suicide at age 24. After bikes appeared at his funeral in his honor, friends and family organized the first awareness ride. “The first ride had 15 to 20 riders,” per Lynn. She added, “I fell in love with riding thanks to Slate.” “Slate taught me to really live. He taught me to love and live through the motorcycle.”

Lynn Kimball is a professional counselor who co-owns Blue Sky Counseling with her husband Scott.

The event soon partnered with the U.S. Veterans Motorcycle Club Trinity Chapter (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit chartered in Alamogordo in 2018, with national roots dating to 2007). The club’s mission — veterans helping veterans — aligned perfectly with Lynn’s story, and together they expanded the ride into a major fundraiser.

History of the Annual Ride (as covered by 2nd Life Media Alamogordo Town News):

Early years (first ride): 15–20 riders focused on memory and suicide awareness.

By 2023 (5th Annual, May 6): Expected 75+ bikers and supporters.

2024 (6th Annual, May 4): Continued growth with 75 or more participants, including out-of-state riders.

2025 (7th Annual, May 3): Drew local and national attention, with the U.S. Veterans MC national president attending the largest gathering to date.

Funds raised have supported veteran needs — from building roofs for at-risk vets to directing them toward mental health resources. The ride highlights the ongoing crisis: an average of 22 veteran suicides per day, with many facing barriers like stigma, long VA wait times, and untreated PTSD or traumatic brain injury.

“Join us as we ride with purpose and honor those we’ve lost,” organizers emphasize each year.

Why It Matters

Veteran suicide remains a critical issue, but this event turns community passion into real support. Whether you ride, drive, or simply show up to cheer, your presence makes a difference.
