In a formal release issued Tuesday morning, the office of State Senator Nicholas Paul announced his immediate resignation from the New Mexico Legislature, citing health challenges and a need to focus on family.

Senator Paul, a Republican representing District 33—which includes parts of Otero, Lincoln, and Chaves counties—was elected in 2024 and began his term in January 2025. His resignation comes less than a year into his tenure.

Serving the people of District 33 has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Paul stated in the release. “Due to recent health concerns, I must step away from public service to prioritize my well-being and my family.”

AlamogordoTownNews.org Streaming Edition with Anthony Lucero reached out to Mr. Paul for further comment. He wrote back that he was not doing any interviews at this time and referred us back to his press release.

Replacement Process Begins

With Paul’s departure, New Mexico law requires that the vacancy be filled by a member of the same political party. The county commissions of Otero, Lincoln, and Chaves will each nominate a Republican candidate to replace him. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is then legally obligated to appoint one of those nominees to serve the remainder of the term.

The timeline for the appointment is not fixed, but officials expect the process to move quickly to ensure District 33 has representation in the upcoming legislative session.

Local leaders have expressed support for Paul’s decision and praised his service. “Senator Paul has always been a dedicated public servant,” said one Otero County official. “We wish him strength and healing in the days ahead.”

Alamogordo Mayor Susan Payne said. “I have the utmost respect for Paul and have known him for years. This resignation saddens me. I pray for his health and well being.”

Alamogordo Mayor Pro Tempore, Sharon McDonald said of Senator Paul, “he was a honest, passionate and patient commissioner and Senator. Paul has always put community and family first. I pray for his health and wish the best for him and his family.”

This is a developing story. Updates on the nomination and appointment process will follow.
