This morning, approximately 30 members of the Doña Ana County District Attorney's Office came together to dedicate their time and energy at Casa de Peregrinos and El Caldito Soup Kitchen, two vital community organizations serving individuals and families in need.
The team worked from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM, assisting with food distribution, packaging, meal preparation, and other essential services. With today's efforts, staff contributed over 100 hours of cumulative community service.
This effort stems from a court order issued in response to a late disclosure incident in December, which initially resulted in a $1,000 fine imposed by Judge Richard M. Jacquez. District Attorney Fernando R. Macias asked the court to reconsider, and the court subsequently withdrew the fine and instead ordered the DA's Office to complete ten hours of community service."
While the circumstances that led to this were regrettable, we are grateful for the opportunity to give back to our community in a meaningful way," said DA Macias.
"Today was about service, solidarity, and demonstrating our office's commitment to accountability and public trust.
"Casa de Peregrinos and El Caldito Soup Kitchen have a longstanding history of service to Doña Ana County residents facing food insecurity and hardship. The strong turnout from the office reflects a spirit of unity and a shared dedication to supporting local nonprofits that make a difference every day.Given the overwhelmingly positive experience, the DA's Office is looking to explore other opportunities to engage in community service projects in the future, as staff members expressed how much they enjoyed the sense of giving back."
We look forward to continuing to strengthen our ties with the community we serve," DA Macias added.
