Alamogordo, NM – March 12, 2026 – High school sports action heated up across Otero County this week, with impressive softball victories for Alamogordo and Tularosa, a split doubleheader for Mescalero Apache baseball, and a bittersweet end to the boys basketball season for Tularosa. From dominant pitching to offensive explosions, local athletes delivered thrilling performances as spring seasons kicked off and winter campaigns wrapped up.
Alamogordo Softball Roars to 10-1 Victory Over Silver
The Alamogordo Lady Tigers opened their 2026 campaign in style, dismantling the Silver Fighting Colts 10-1 in a commanding home win. Junior pitcher Khloe Lunar was the star of the show, tossing a complete game with 11 strikeouts, allowing just six hits, two walks, and one hit-by-pitch. Her dominance on the mound set the tone for a balanced offensive attack that featured four home runs and timely hitting.
Leading the charge at the plate was Hailey Evans, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, two RBIs, a walk, a stolen base, and three runs scored. Davi Gonzalez contributed with a 2-for-4 effort, including a homer, a double, three RBIs, and a run. Alyssa Bautista added a double, three RBIs, two runs, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch in a 1-for-2 performance. Lunar helped her own cause with a 1-for-3 day, blasting a home run for two RBIs and scoring twice. Lola Carbajal and Allison Cisco each drew walks to round out the lineup.
The win propels the Lady Tigers to 1-0 on the young season. They’ll look to build momentum in their next outing at Los Lunas on Friday.
Tularosa Softball Overpowers Chaparral in 37-19 Rout
Not to be outdone, the Tularosa Lady Cats unleashed a offensive barrage in their opener, overwhelming the Chaparral Lobos 37-19. The high-scoring affair showcased Tularosa’s potent lineup, which exploded for runs in bunches to secure the lopsided victory.
While individual stats weren’t immediately available, the Lady Cats’ relentless attack overwhelmed Chaparral’s defense, marking a strong start to their season. Now 1-0, Tularosa will carry the momentum into their next matchup at Ruidoso on Tuesday.
Mescalero Apache Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Dexter
In baseball action, the Mescalero Apache Chiefs battled the Dexter Demons in a non-district doubleheader, emerging with a split. The Demons took Game 1 convincingly, 15-5, but the Chiefs bounced back in Game 2 for a 6-2 triumph.
Mescalero’s resilience in the nightcap highlighted strong pitching and timely hits, holding Dexter to just two runs while plating six of their own. The split leaves the Chiefs at 1-1 heading into the Cobre Tournament, where they’ll face Hot Springs on Thursday to open pool play.
Tularosa Boys Basketball Season Ends in 3A Quarterfinals
On the hardwood, the Tularosa Wildcats’ impressive season came to a close in the NMAA 3A State Tournament quarterfinals, falling 64-53 to the No. 10-seeded Robertson Cardinals. As the No. 2 seed, Tularosa entered with high expectations after a dominant regular season, but Robertson’s hot shooting and defensive pressure proved too much in the upset.
The Wildcats fought valiantly, showcasing the grit that defined their campaign, but couldn’t overcome the Cardinals’ second-half surge. Congrats to Coach Billy Burns and the entire Tularosa squad on a memorable year filled with highlights and community pride.
