VEGUITA, N.M. — The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on Friday, May 29, 2026, in Veguita.
According to officials, at approximately 12:15 p.m., New Mexico State Police officers and Socorro County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call at 23 Peralta Place. The caller reported that a male subject was on their property, armed with a firearm, and had fired a shot in their direction.
Upon arrival, officers encountered the male and gave verbal commands for him to approach with his hands raised and empty. The man refused to comply and retreated toward the residence.
Search and arrest warrants were obtained, and the New Mexico State Police Tactical Team along with the Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT) were called to the scene. Negotiators made multiple attempts to peacefully persuade the man to surrender.
Later, the suspect walked toward officers while armed with a handgun. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, he did not comply. New Mexico State Police officers then discharged their firearms, striking the man. Officers immediately provided life-saving aid, but the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
A firearm was located near the suspect following the shooting. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
No law enforcement officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.
The officers involved have been placed on standard administrative leave as the investigation proceeds. The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is conducting a thorough, independent investigation. All evidence, reports, and witness statements will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review and final determination regarding the justification of the use of force.
This remains an active investigation.

The "mayor" has an office? Everyone sees straight through your P.R. circus. Your lap dog , Old McDonald, is just as half-blind and limited as the rest of us poor ******** scrambling in the real world.
Jones, I hope you get some help with your anger management issues soon.
Obviously you have never met nor engaged with the mayor. She works tirelessly full file research, engaging with constituents and legislators at the state and federal level and with policy experts from DC to New Mexico to learn and better serve her constituency.
I hope Dr. Hernandez is a guest speaker at an upcoming meeting of the Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission. She has so much wisdom and experience to pass on to younger generations.
It's the product of living in a lowly bubble: an immature, undeveloped writing style that has no insight or reasonable conclusion. Those PhD's from Watsamatta U in New Mexico are only a union card for activists to rally 'round and a far cry from what $200k a year should buy.
I say bring back the Piggly Wiggly.
a worthwhile attempt to explain an unfortunate situation, that was combined with a billing system not easily understood. and, yet another opportunity to state that both electrical power generation and public water reserves are limited resources - and data centers s
still hopeful that there can be some arrangement that would allow the existence of the facility to continue.
Great article, but I think there is some evidence that the large bills people are receiving are not just due to estimated usage. Some people have reported that part or all of their bill was calculated at a higher pricing tier, as if two months' worth of usage was treated as if it occurred in one month.
