"Let's Plan Alamogordo's Future Together": Mayor McDonald Calls on Residents to Shape City's New Comprehensive Plan

Alamogordo, NM — The City of Alamogordo has launched a community survey as part of its effort to update the city's Comprehensive Plan, and Mayor Sharon McDonald is urging every resident to take part in shaping the document that will guide the community for years to come.

The Comprehensive Plan is Alamogordo's long-range roadmap, guiding decisions on growth, housing, infrastructure, transportation, economic development, water resources, public spaces, and overall quality of life. The City is working alongside its staff and planning consultants to bring the plan up to date, and officials say resident input is the single most important ingredient.

For Mayor McDonald, the effort fulfills a promise made on the campaign trail.

"When I ran for mayor, one of my commitments was to help create a clear, long-term vision for Alamogordo," McDonald said. "Shortly after taking office, I began meeting with the City Manager, City staff, and our planning consultants to move forward with an updated Comprehensive Plan."

The mayor emphasized that the plan is more than a planning document — it is a source of stability for the city across changing administrations.

"A Comprehensive Plan serves as our community's roadmap," she said. "It also provides continuity. Elected officials and staff will change over time, but a community-developed plan gives the City a shared direction that can continue across administrations. It helps us make thoughtful and consistent decisions instead of starting over every few years."

But McDonald was clear that the plan's success depends on who holds the pen.

"Most importantly, this cannot simply be the Mayor's plan, the Commission's plan, or the consultant's plan. It must be Alamogordo's plan — and that means it must be shaped by you," she said. "We want to hear from as many residents as possible, not only those who regularly attend meetings, but working families, students, seniors, veterans, business owners, parents, young people, and residents from every part of our city."

The survey asks residents to weigh in on fundamental questions about the community's direction: What do you love about Alamogordo? What needs to improve? What kind of community do you want Alamogordo to be in the years ahead?

"Your experiences, concerns, and ideas matter," McDonald said. "The more people who participate, the stronger and more representative our plan will be. Let's plan Alamogordo's future together."
