Alamogordo, Tiger Stadium- The Roswell Coyotes leaned on a punishing ground game and never trailed Friday night, pulling away from Alamogordo 56-26 in the district opener for both teams.

Roswell struck early and often. Luis Rodriguez broke loose for a 58-yard touchdown run just over two minutes into the game, and with 9:48 still showing in the first quarter the Coyotes led 7-0. Andruw Fuentez then found Danny Castro on a 38-yard scoring strike at the 5:42 mark to make it 14-0.

Alamogordo answered late in the opening frame. Qymani Patterson raced 36 yards for the Tigers' first touchdown, though the extra point missed, and Roswell carried a 14-6 lead into the second quarter.

The second period turned into a shootout. Fuentez added a 12-yard touchdown run at 9:37 to push the lead to 21-6, but the Tigers kept fighting — Samuel Strong ripped off a 35-yard scoring run, with Russell converting the extra point, to cut it to 21-13 with 8:06 before halftime. Fuentez responded again, this time from 45 yards out, restoring a 28-13 cushion. Alamogordo got the last word of the half when Tristan Bowman punched in a 4-yard touchdown as time expired, and the missed extra point left the score 28-19 at the break.

Any hopes of an Alamogordo comeback faded in the third quarter, when Roswell scored twice without an answer. Zeke Barrientos went 38 yards to paydirt with 6:29 to play in the period, and Rodriguez added his second long touchdown of the night — a 43-yard burst at 3:49 — to open a 42-19 lead heading to the fourth.

Patterson gave the Tigers a spark early in the final quarter with an 8-yard touchdown run to make it 42-26, but Roswell slammed the door. Danny Guevara scored from 9 yards out at 9:44, and Jonathan Ellis capped the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run with 2:34 remaining.

The loss drops Alamogordo to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in district play. The Tigers travel to face Goddard next Friday.
