Volleyball Roundup: Lady Tigers Claim Bronze Bracket Title at Zia Classic

ROSWELL — The Alamogordo Lady Tigers made a habit of living dangerously Saturday at the Zia Classic — and it paid off with hardware.

Alamogordo won a pair of grueling five-set matches to capture the Bronze bracket championship, capping the tournament with a 25-17, 17-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-13 victory over Miyamura in the bracket final.

The Lady Tigers opened the day by outlasting Grants in five sets, 16-25, 25-15, 25-18, 14-25, 15-9. After dropping the opening set, Alamogordo stormed back to take the next two before Grants forced a decider, where the Lady Tigers pulled away late.

That set up the bronze final against Miyamura, and once again Alamogordo needed all five sets. After taking the opener comfortably, the Lady Tigers dropped two straight and faced elimination territory before rallying to even the match and edging Miyamura 15-13 in a tense fifth set.

The two wins lift Alamogordo to 3-5 on the season. The Lady Tigers stay on the road Tuesday with a trip back to Roswell to face the Lady Coyotes.

Lordsburg Edges Tularosa in Five at Magdalena Tournament

MAGDALENA — Tularosa came up just short in a back-and-forth battle at the Magdalena Tournament, falling to Lordsburg in five sets, 25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 16-25, 15-8.

The Lady Cats traded sets with Lordsburg throughout the match, answering each time they fell behind, but Lordsburg took control in the fifth and closed it out 15-8. The loss drops Tularosa to 2-5. The Lady Cats were back on the court later in the day with a 4 p.m. match against Capitan.

Mescalero Apache Picks Up First Win of the Season

The Mescalero Apache Lady Chiefs broke into the win column, defeating Alamo Navajo in four sets, 25-21, 23-25, 25-12, 25-18.

After splitting the first two sets, Mescalero Apache took charge with a dominant 25-12 third set and finished off the match in the fourth. The win moves the Lady Chiefs to 1-8. Mescalero Apache travels to Native American Community Academy on Wednesday.
