Alamogordo, NM – April 17, 2026 – As the world observes Earth Day 2026, the City of Alamogordo is inviting residents and visitors to a vibrant, family-friendly celebration at the Alameda Park Zoo on Saturday, April 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

This year’s global Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” emphasizes the collective strength of individuals and communities to drive meaningful environmental change. It highlights how everyday actions — from conserving energy and protecting habitats to supporting local sustainability efforts — can shape a healthier future for our shared planet, independent of larger political or administrative shifts. The message underscores a powerful truth: people have the power to create lasting impact through collective action, education, and stewardship.

Earth Day at the zoo brings together wildlife, nature, and our community in a meaningful way,” said Alamogordo Mayor Sharon McDonald . “It’s an opportunity for families to enjoy interactive experiences while gaining practical knowledge on sustainability, come on out and then after head to the Holloman Airshow for yet another fun filled family event.”

In Alamogordo, nestled in the heart of the Tularosa Basin, the zoo event brings this theme to life amid the region’s unique desert wildlife and natural surroundings. Organizers from the City of Alamogordo Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the Otero County Master Gardeners and zoo staff, have prepared a day filled with hands-on activities, educational booths, interactive exhibits, crafts, and live demonstrations focused on conservation and sustainability.

Highlights include a special butterfly release, where locally raised butterflies will take flight — a symbolic act of renewal and habitat support coordinated with local schools. Visitors can meet Smokey the Bear and Dolly to learn about wildfire prevention and forest stewardship. A live Swainson’s Hawk encounter will offer close-up views of a magnificent raptor while educating guests on bird-of-prey conservation.

Additional features include live zookeeper talks and animal demonstrations, opportunities to connect with local conservationists, and activities designed for all ages. Proceeds from the event will support the 2026 Junior Zookeeper Camp, providing hands-on learning experiences for young people passionate about animals and the environment.

“Earth Day at the Alameda Park Zoo is the perfect way to celebrate our planet surrounded by wildlife, nature, and community spirit,” said a representative from Visit Alamogordo. “It’s a chance for families to enjoy fun, interactive experiences while discovering practical ways to protect local habitats and contribute to a more sustainable world.”

The celebration also includes voter registration opportunities, encouraging civic engagement alongside environmental awareness.

Earth Day, first observed in 1970, continues to inspire global action for environmental protection. In 2026, the focus on “Our Power, Our Planet” serves as a reminder that community-driven efforts — big and small — have the potential to reduce environmental risks, lower costs, and build a more resilient future for generations to come.

After enjoying the Earth Day festivities at the zoo, residents and visitors are encouraged to extend the weekend of community celebration by attending the Legacy of Liberty Air Show at Holloman Air Force Base on Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19.

The free, public air show runs from approximately 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day and showcases the power and precision of military and civilian aviation. Highlights include breathtaking aerial demonstrations, static displays of historic and modern aircraft, and family-friendly activities. The headlining act features the Patriots Jet Team, the largest civilian-owned aerobatic jet team in the western hemisphere. Attendees can also enjoy STEM exhibits, food vendors, exotic cars, and demonstrations highlighting the 49th Wing’s role as the Air Force’s largest F-16 Fighting Falcon and MQ-9 Reaper formal training unit.

Base access for the general public begins at 8:45 a.m., with gates to the performance area opening at 9 a.m. The event promises high-flying thrills and a proud display of American airpower right here in Alamogordo.
