CHRISTUS Health Marks National Rural Health Day with Expanded Services in Alamogordo - AlamogordoTownNews.org

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — CHRISTUS Health joins communities nationwide Thursday in recognizing National Rural Health Day, highlighting its growing commitment to rural families in Otero County and beyond.

The observance honors the resilience of rural health professionals and patients, and CHRISTUS Health’s Alamogordo hospital underscored its role as a lifeline for families who might otherwise travel hours for emergency care, labor and delivery, imaging, rehabilitation, and specialty services.

I remember when families, including mine, often had to travel to get the care they needed,” said Reuben Murray, chief executive officer of CHRISTUS Health’s Alamogordo hospital and an Alamogordo High School graduate. “That makes it especially meaningful to see how much local health care is improving.”

Meeting Rural Challenges

Rural hospitals often operate with limited resources, many designated as Critical Access facilities with only 25 beds. To meet these challenges locally, CHRISTUS Health has added more than 100 new physicians in Alamogordo, introduced advanced technology such as robotic-assisted surgery, and is actively recruiting dozens more providers to reduce wait times and expand services.

New and Expanded Services

Orthopedic care: Patients now have access to orthopedic surgery in Alamogordo, with follow-up visits available in Las Cruces or Ruidoso.

Women’s health: Specialized physicians provide care across every stage of life, from routine visits to advanced gynecologic treatment.

Mental health support: Expanded access to professionals focused on emotional and behavioral well-being.

Heart and cancer care: New specialists and technology deliver earlier diagnoses and more effective treatment options.

Community Investment

Beyond clinical services, CHRISTUS Health contributed more than $1.9 million in charity care, $1.3 million in community services, and over $3 million in community benefits during the last fiscal year, strengthening the communities it serves.

This community shaped who I am, and I’m honored to help strengthen the care our families and communities deserve,” Murray said. “Together, we’re building a stronger, more connected health system, putting people first and keeping care close to home.”
