In a powerful show of unity and compassion, Community Power New Mexico and Otero County People 4 Democracy are joining forces to host a community food drive benefiting Runner’s Refuge, a local organization dedicated to serving those facing hardship.
The event will take place on Saturday, November 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community Power New Mexico Work Hub, located at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1110 Indiana Ave. in Alamogordo. Volunteers from the organizing groups and the church will be on hand to assist donors with unloading their contributions.
Organizers stress that the drive is open to everyone, regardless of political affiliation, religion, or background. “These are uncertain times,” the announcement reads, “and it is critically important that we support our neighbors… whether they are furloughed federal workers, unpaid military families, or those who are experiencing hard times for whatever reason.”
The drive is seeking shelf-stable food items such as canned proteins (beef, fish, chicken), powdered milk, boxed and canned meals, vegetables, baking ingredients, spices, and herbs. In addition, paper goods and hygiene products—including toilet paper, soap, shampoo, lotion, deodorant, and feminine products—are in high demand. Pet food is also welcomed, as many families are struggling to care for their animals.
Organizers ask that donors refrain from bringing frozen items, as there is no capacity to store them safely.
For those unable to contribute at this location or time, the groups encourage donations to other local organizations, all of which are facing increased demand amid economic uncertainty.
This food drive is more than a charitable effort—it’s a call to action for Alamogordo residents to stand together and uplift one another in times of need.
