On Thursday, October 12, 2023, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau (IB) was requested by the Artesia Police Department (APD) to investigate an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred outside the Artesia Public Safety Complex, located at 3300 W. Main Street in Artesia, New Mexico.
IB agents from Alamogordo responded to the scene and began their investigation. Initial findings revealed that an APD Sergeant discharged one round from his duty weapon at a male individual, later identified as Acadio Lucero, after observing Lucero actively shooting at another male, identified as Mark Rommel.
Through interviews and evidence gathered at the scene, agents determined that the incident stemmed from a planned child custody exchange between Mr. Rommel and his estranged female partner. The female was accompanied by her boyfriend, Mr. Lucero, who had armed himself prior to the meeting.
Witness statements indicated that Mr. Rommel and Mr. Lucero engaged in a brief, non-hostile conversation before Lucero retrieved his firearm and began firing multiple rounds at Mr. Rommel.
During his interview with investigators, Mr. Lucero admitted to deliberately arming himself and firing at Mr. Rommel. The investigation confirmed that Mr. Rommel was unarmed at the time of the shooting. As Mr. Lucero continued firing at Mr. Rommel, the APD Sergeant intervened, and fired a single round that struck Mr. Lucero, stopping the attack.
The 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office approved an arrest warrant for Mr. Lucero on charges of First-Degree Murder. He was taken into custody on November 2, 2023, and booked into the Eddy County Detention Center.
A four-day jury trial began on June 2, 2025, at the Eddy County District Court in Carlsbad, NM. The trial concluded with the jury finding Mr. Lucero guilty of First-Degree Murder. He was immediately sentenced to Life in Prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
This case was thoroughly investigated by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau, with assistance from the New Mexico State Police Crime Scene Team.
Looks like her campaign will be generating a few skid marks in it's attempt to gain traction.
Sunny, with a high of 93 and low of 66 degrees. Sunny in the morning, clear overnight.
Another great Maryland dad.
the saddest part of this story is that we will punish the guy who was hired to do the smuggling - instead of the person(s) who PAID him to do so.
They're catching the ring leaders as well, slowly but surely.
But I'd be interested to know what industries you think might be willing to pay $15k - $20k per person for unskilled labor that they're also at risk of losing to deportation, before getting a single days work out of them?
an extremely sad situation, in which one person was scared, and the other was killed - it is very difficult to imagine reconciling those two facts.
That wasn't fear. That was an extreme over kill... it is sad. And even sadder that anyone could possibly make any excuses for a piece of filth thinking he is above the law because he wears a badge... in fact to even come to that conclusion is sickening... shame on you.
by no means do i think - nor did i say - that the deputy is, somehow, above the law. my comment was simply observing that because he could not control his emotions, an innocent human being is dead...
and that is very sad situation.
I haven't seen MLG this upset since that girl dropped a house on her sister 90 years ago.
She neglects to mention that Democrats, including all 3 of our representatives, and both Senators, voted for a 68% tax hike.
All of them voted against expanded compensation for down winders.
tell us about this 68% tax hike, the clip doesn't mention anything about that - or is that something else that pam bondi has been sending you information regarding?
I keep forgetting that that information was classified Top Secret.
