Alamogordo, N.M. — New Mexico State University Alamogordo (NMSU-A) has released highlights of summer information for the public.

NMSU-A will be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day and will resume normal operations on Monday, July 6.

Student of the Month Honorees

NMSU-A continues its tradition of recognizing outstanding students:

June 2026 Student of the Month: Jayci Shriver
A sophomore majoring in Allied Health–Occupational Education, Jayci balances a full-time job with strong academics, excellent attendance, and peer support. Faculty and staff praised her positive attitude, critical-thinking skills, and dedication.

July 2026 Student of the Month: Ashley-Morgan Smith
A senior in the Nursing (AASN) program, Ashley-Morgan is recognized for her resilience, academic growth, and commitment to service. She has shown remarkable progress in clinical knowledge and leads community outreach efforts in health education and wellness for local families.

Shape Fall Class Schedules — Survey Closes August 18

Students are encouraged to complete the Class Scheduling Survey by August 18, 2026. Feedback helps NMSU-A determine which courses and times are most needed. Two random participants will win an NMSU-A swag bag (branded mug, clear tote, and car decal).

Upcoming Student Events & Orientations

Dual Credit Night — Friday, July 24 at 6 p.m. at Rocket City Family Fun Center (3751 Mesa Village Dr.). New, prospective, and returning Dual Credit students are invited for free bowling, connection, and information about their educational journey.

Library Programs & New Podcast Room

The Townsend Library invites the entire community to free weekly Arts & Crafts every Wednesday at 10 a.m. through July 29. Projects include Mason Jar Painting (July 1), Moss Mirrors (July 8), Terrariums (July 15), Phone Charms & Keychains (July 22), and Notebook & Binder Decorating (July 29).

The library’s new Podcast Room is now open for creative and academic projects. The July Book Nook also highlights new arrivals and library resources.

Scholarships & Academic Support

Several scholarship opportunities are highlighted:

Teacher Preparation Scholarship — Helps eligible New Mexico students cover tuition, fees, and more for approved teacher education programs.

Scholar Dollar$ — One application opens the door to 20+ scholarships for NMSU-A/Alamogordo students for the 2026–2027 aid year. Apply at scholarships.nmsu.edu.

Early Childhood Scholarship (ECECD) — Supports current and future early childhood professionals pursuing certificates and degrees.

The Academic Support Center has released its Summer 2026 Tutor Schedule (May 27 – August 15). English and Math tutors are available; appointments recommended. Contact: ascnmsua@nmsu.edu or 575-439-3853.

Workforce & Community Resources

Fiber Optics Bootcamp returns in September 2026 (Track #3: Sept. 7–11). Participants can take the full bootcamp or individual courses in Technician, Testing & Maintenance, and Splicing — all sanctioned by the Fiber Optic Association. Register early via Continuing Education.

Welcome Baby Program (Ben Archer Health Center) — Free prenatal/postnatal education, monthly home visits, safe-sleep training with free bassinet, low-cost car seats, and developmental resources for expecting families and children under 5. 2150 Hwy 54 S., 575-443-8133 ext. 5169.

Milk & Cookies Support Group (Otero Chapter, NM Breastfeeding Task Force) — Relaxed, family-centered peer support. Meets 2nd Wednesday (10:30–11:30 a.m.) and last Thursday (5–7 p.m.) at Ben Archer Health Center. Contact Jacqueline at 575-202-5864.

100% Otero initiatives — Access the community calendar, low-interest microloans (vehicle repairs, deposits, etc.) through Nusenda Credit Union, and a directory of vital support services. Early Childhood Coalition meetings are held monthly (usually the 3rd Monday) at the NMSU-A ProTech Building (Room 106) or via Zoom.

2nd Life Media AlamogordoTownNews.org and KALHRadio.org celebrate academic excellence and the campus as an important institution to Alamogordo community success and provide this update as a community service.
