Alamogordo, NM — The Alamogordo Tennis Association (ATA), a cornerstone of local recreation since its founding in 1966, recently highlighted its enduring legacy in the community. Members participated in last month’s Voices of Alamogordo Community Forum hosted by KALHRadio.org and 2nd Life Media Alamogordo Town News and capped the milestone with a vibrant 60th anniversary celebration on Saturday, June 20, 2026.

The ATA joined discussions during the April 2026 installment of the Voices of Alamogordo series, hosted by 2nd Life Media Alamogordo Town News and KALH Radio explaining the impact of 60 years and their history. They also explained the expanded offerings for kids of all ages to learn the sport of tennis. That forum focused on Parks & Recreation, Library, Senior Services, and featured 14 nonprofits, providing a platform for community leaders and residents to engage on quality-of-life issues.

The ATA’s involvement underscored the vital role of tennis facilities and youth/adult programming in Alamogordo’s recreational landscape and family activities for all ages.

Just weeks later, on June 20, tennis enthusiasts of all ages — including players from as far as El Paso and beyond gathered at the Alamogordo Tennis Courts (1700 Oregon Ave.) for an afternoon of festivities. The event celebrated six decades of leadership in promoting the sport locally. Participants enjoyed games, camaraderie, and reflections on the association’s history.

Founded by Grady Nicholson in 1966, the ATA has been instrumental in developing and maintaining Alamogordo’s public tennis facilities. Association efforts in the mid-2000s helped secure funding and rebuild the courts into one of southern New Mexico’s premier complexes, complete with lighting upgrades. The group continues to offer youth summer programs, league play, regional tournaments (such as USTA Southern New Mexico scrambles), and open play opportunities for players of all skill levels.

Locals attending noted the inclusive atmosphere: players from multiple generations came together to honor the past while looking ahead to continued growth.

The ATA plays a key part in fostering healthier lifestyles, youth development, and community connections through tennis. As the organization enters its next chapter, it remains committed to expanding access and inspiring new players in Alamogordo and beyond.
