The City of Alamogordo has announced the temporary suspension of access to the bridge located on 10th street by the library and near Albertsons. As work has been ongoing on a bridge maintenance project, funded by a New Mexico DOT grant of approximately $600,000, during this maintenance, which required the bridge to be temporarily closed, crews discovered a six-inch gap running along the north-to-south span of the bridge. Upon this discovery, the City immediately contacted the appropriate experts and notified the New Mexico DOT. After evaluation, it was determined that the bridge was unsafe to reopen and may require a full replacement.

For safety purposes a detour is in place please note for your travel plans that additional travel time and delays in the area may be expected.

The city’s senior project manager and city staff has been diligently working with contractors, stakeholders and safety experts to ensure the safety to Alamogordo citizens. The city staff regrets any inconvenience in travel due to this issue but want the public to understand its  a “public safety first approach” to resolving this matter.

Also be advised that due to public concerns, Oregon Avenue has become a no-parking zone from 10th Street to 9th Street. This measure is being taken to ensure safety and accessibility in the area. Temporary no-parking signs will be placed along the affected area.

The city staff thanks citizens for the
cooperation with this change. For those needing access to the Alamogordo Public Library, parking is available on the north end of City Hall, and the protected pedestrian crosswalk always allows for
crossing E 9th Street to the Library.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Adherence to this temporary change is
greatly appreciated to maintain a safe and accessible community environment toward the library and services within the area.
