The Alamogordo Police and New Mexico State Police are asking area residents to avoid the area around White Sands Blvd and 10th Street.
Earlier this afternoon a car was traveling at high speed lost control and collided into the light signals at 10th and White Sands heading forward on 10th. Unverified witness accounts not yet verified by the police claim: "A came speeding going at least 60 down 10th street, blowing through the stop signs at 10th and New york and then proceeded to use the right turn lane to get around other car stopped at the red light. The car speeding then blew through the red light. He immediately collided with a car, that car collided with the pole, and he flipped into a wall, and the car landed on its side". The person that was the fatality was not the person speeding but is alleged to be an innocent stopped at the light.
Two vehicles show signs of impact and one individual has died as a result the accident.
This is an evolving story with state investigators on the way to the scene given the fatality. As information becomes available we will update the story from verified sources within the law enforcement community.
The investigation will take several hours then road crews will be dispatched to determine a plan of action for the disabled lights for this heavily used intersection.
The city of Alamogordo has designated 10th and White Sands as a 4 way stop until repairs can be made. However as of 7 am Monday the intersection is still closed. The city and the state is in discussion due to safety concerns raised and may revisit the 4 way stop as proposed via their press release, and await to reopen until most repairs may be made.
