Tularosa Homecoming Parade to Close Highway 54/70 and Nearby Streets Thursday Afternoon

TULAROSA, N.M. — Drivers passing through Tularosa on Thursday, Sept. 17, should plan for delays as the Tularosa Police Department temporarily closes several roads, including a stretch of U.S. Highway 54/70, for the Tularosa Municipal Schools Homecoming Parade.

The parade begins at 1 p.m. Police said Granado Street will close first, at noon, so students at the elementary and middle schools have a clear view of the festivities. Traffic on St. Francis Drive, which carries U.S. Highway 54/70 through town, will begin shutting down at 12:50 p.m. Roads are expected to reopen at about 1:20 p.m.

Affected roads include St. Francis Drive from Alamo Street to Higuera Avenue, Wildcat Turf Road, 8th Street, Bosque Street, and Granado Street to First Street.

Police recommend that motorists use South Bookout Road to Central Avenue to avoid the parade route.

That detour is not open to semi-trucks or oversized loads, however, and the department said no alternate route exists for those vehicles. Commercial drivers traveling St. Francis Drive will have to stop and wait until the parade ends and the highway reopens.

After the parade, officers will direct traffic at the Higuera Avenue signal and will stay in the area until congestion clears and normal traffic flow returns.

The department asked drivers to use caution, follow the directions of traffic control personnel, and watch for pedestrians and parade participants. Police thanked the community for its patience in helping keep the celebration safe for students and families.
