OTERO COUNTY, N.M. — Local housing advocates took to the airwaves this week to update Otero County residents on efforts to expand access to safe, affordable housing — and to invite the community to help shape a statewide housing plan.

Wendy Urquidez and Nadia Sikes, representing 100% Otero, appeared on a live segment with Krazy KALH Radio on July 10 to discuss the county’s ongoing housing initiative. The conversation is part of a broader push by 100% Otero, the local chapter of the 100% New Mexico initiative run by the Anna, Age Eight Institute, which works to ensure that all county residents have access to ten vital services needed to survive and thrive — with housing among the top priorities.

100% Otero’s Housing Action Team has spent recent months digging into the county’s affordable housing landscape, from tracking unit availability with the Eastern Regional Housing Authority to raising awareness about the realities of homelessness in the region, including families living in campers without utilities. The team has also worked to build community buy-in for new housing solutions and to counter “not-in-my-backyard” resistance by sharing the stories of local residents affected by the housing shortage.

The organization’s work recently earned recognition when 100% Otero was named the 2025 Nonprofit of the Year by the Sacramento Mountain Foundation.

Statewide Effort Wants to Hear From You

100% Otero’s local work feeds into a larger statewide effort, the New Mexico Housing Plan, which is gathering input from residents across the state as it prepares housing policy recommendations ahead of the 2027 legislative session. Organizers say they want to hear from as many New Mexicans as possible — including educators, landlords, home builders, faith-based organizations, tribal housing associations, tenants, veterans, youth, and people currently experiencing homelessness — through a set of short surveys tailored to different community roles. Residents can also submit their personal housing story directly to the plan’s organizers.
