Otero County Roundup: Tularosa Rallies in Five Sets; Alamogordo Teams Fall in Soccer, Volleyball

It was a tough night for Alamogordo but a thrilling one in Tularosa, as Otero County teams took the field and court in girls soccer and volleyball action.

Tularosa Outlasts Mescalero Apache in Five-Set Battle

In the night's most dramatic contest, the Tularosa Lady Cats went the distance against Mescalero Apache, prevailing in five sets, 18-25, 25-17, 25-12, 23-25, 15-5.

After dropping the opening set, Tularosa stormed back to take the next two frames convincingly. Mescalero Apache refused to fold, pushing the match to a decisive fifth set with a tight 25-23 win in the fourth. But the Lady Cats slammed the door in the finale, cruising 15-5 to seal the victory.

The win moves Tularosa to 2-4 on the season. The Lady Cats travel next to the Magdalena Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Mescalero Apache, still searching for its first win at 0-8, returns home Friday to host Alamo Navajo.

Chaparral Edges Alamogordo Girls Soccer, 2-1

The Alamogordo Lady Tigers dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to Chaparral in girls soccer.

Ashley Spataro provided the lone goal for Alamogordo, but it wasn't enough to overcome the visitors in the one-goal defeat.

The loss drops the Lady Tigers to 2-3 on the year. Alamogordo won't have long to regroup — the Lady Tigers host Santa Teresa on Friday at 9 a.m. as part of the Alamogordo Round Robin Tournament.

Gadsden Sweeps Alamogordo Volleyball

On the volleyball court, Alamogordo fell to Gadsden in straight sets, 25-19, 26-24, 25-14.

The Lady Tigers made a match of it in the second set, falling just short in a 26-24 thriller, but Gadsden pulled away decisively in the third to complete the sweep.

Alamogordo drops to 1-5 on the season. The Lady Tigers will look to turn things around this weekend at the Zia Classic Tournament in Roswell on Friday and Saturday.
