Busy Weekend for Otero County Teams on the Pitch and the Court

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — Otero County high school teams were in action across southern New Mexico over the weekend, with the Alamogordo boys soccer team capping a tough tournament run on a high note and area volleyball squads searching for answers after winless outings.

Boys Soccer: Tigers Finish Coyote Classic With a Bang

The Alamogordo boys soccer team ended the Roswell Coyote Classic in style, blanking Valencia 4-0 in its tournament finale. Fynn Krafka, Nakoa Perez, Ari Cortez and Jaxon Byars each found the net for the Tigers, with Kyle Tamayo and Bradley Covell adding assists. Alamogordo controlled the match from the start, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime on goals from Byars and Krafka.

The win closed out an otherwise difficult tournament for the Tigers. Host Roswell handed Alamogordo a 6-2 loss to open the weekend, with Byars and Covell accounting for the Tiger goals. Alamogordo then battled Las Cruces to a 1-1 halftime draw — Tamayo converting off a Gabriel Hernandez corner kick — before falling 4-2. Max Cadoret and Tamayo scored in that contest, with Hernandez picking up an assist.

Girls Soccer: Berridge Stands Tall in Loss to Artesia

The Alamogordo girls soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Artesia despite a heroic effort in goal from Kira Berridge, who racked up 19 saves for the Lady Tigers.

The loss evened Alamogordo’s record at 2-2. The Lady Tigers return home to host Chaparral on Tuesday.

Volleyball: Lady Chiefs Go Winless at Lady Warrior Invitational

The Mescalero Apache volleyball team dropped all of its matches at the Gateway Christian Lady Warrior Invitational in Roswell over the weekend. The Lady Chiefs fell in straight sets to host Gateway Christian, then went 0-2 on Saturday with straight-set losses to Loving and Mesa Vista.

The losses drop Mescalero Apache to 0-7 on the season. The Lady Chiefs will look to get in the win column when they travel to face Tularosa on Tuesday.

Volleyball: Lady Tigers Fall Twice in Las Cruces

Alamogordo’s volleyball team struggled at the Jane Leupold Sweet 16 Tournament in Las Cruces, going 0-2 on the day.

The Lady Tigers opened with a straight-set loss to the Las Cruces JV (25-21, 25-15, 25-22), then battled Chaparral in a tightly contested four-set match before falling 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 26-24. The final two sets were decided by a combined five points.

Alamogordo drops to 1-4 on the season and will return home to host Gadsden on Tuesday.
