Alamogordo, NM — Agents with the White Mountain Drug Task Force, assisted by the Alamogordo Police Department, executed a search warrant in Alamogordo on Thursday, May 7, 2026, resulting in the seizure of significant quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl following a months-long narcotics investigation.
According to a press release from the Otero County Sheriff’s Office, agents recovered approximately 175.59 grams of methamphetamine and approximately 1 gram of fentanyl powder, along with multiple zipper-style packaging bags, a digital scale, and other items consistent with drug distribution activities.
Methamphetamine, commonly known as “meth,” is a powerful synthetic stimulant that affects the central nervous system. It typically appears as a white powder or in crystal form (“crystal meth”) and is associated with severe physical and psychological dependence, along with serious health risks and impacts on community safety. Fentanyl, a highly potent synthetic opioid, poses an even greater danger. Even tiny amounts can cause rapid overdose, respiratory failure, and death. Illicit fentanyl is frequently mixed with other drugs such as methamphetamine, heroin, or counterfeit pills, often without users’ knowledge, contributing heavily to fatal overdoses nationwide.
This recent action builds on the momentum of “Operation Desert Sweep,” conducted on Friday, May 1, 2026. That multi-agency operation involved the Otero County Sheriff’s Office, Alamogordo Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol BORTAC Team, United States Marshals Service, New Mexico Adult Probation and Parole, Cloudcroft Police Department, New Mexico State Police, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, New Mexico Corrections Department Security Intelligence Unit, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
During Operation Desert Sweep, agents executed a search warrant tied to an ongoing investigation involving 48-year-old Edward John Poist. Poist was not present at the residence at the time, and a copy of the warrant was left at the location. A records check later confirmed Poist’s prior 2009 conviction in the Twelfth Judicial District Court for trafficking a controlled substance.
Following further investigation, Poist was arrested and formally charged with:
• Two counts of NMSA §30-31-20(A)(3) Trafficking of a Controlled Substance (Second Offense)
• NMSA §30-31-23.1 Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
Because of his 2009 prior conviction, the current trafficking charges are enhanced to first-degree felony offenses under New Mexico law.
Photos released by the Otero County Sheriff’s Office show seized evidence including multiple clear plastic baggies containing suspected methamphetamine on a wooden surface, additional packaging materials, a digital scale displaying a weight reading, and a portrait of Edward John Poist wearing a Harley-Davidson shirt.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed.

This latest enforcement action highlights continued efforts by local law enforcement to combat the flow of dangerous drugs, including methamphetamine and the deadly fentanyl, into the Alamogordo and Otero County region.
