A Growing Tradition Rooted in Personal Loss

What began as a small memorial ride has become one of Alamogordo’s most meaningful annual veteran events.

Lynn Kimball, founder of The Slate Riders, started the ride in memory of her son, Slate Kimball, who died by suicide at age 24. After motorcycles filled the streets at his funeral in his honor, friends and family organized the first awareness ride. The initial event drew just 15 to 20 riders. Lynn, a professional counselor who co-owns Blue Sky Counseling with her husband Scott, has said riding helped her heal: “Slate taught me to really live. He taught me to love and live through the motorcycle.”

The ride soon partnered with the U.S. Veterans Motorcycle Club Trinity Chapter — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit chartered in Alamogordo in 2018 (with national roots dating back to 2007). The club’s mission of “veterans helping veterans” aligned perfectly, and together they have expanded the event year after year.

Growth Over the Years (as previously reported by 2nd Life Media):

• Early years: Small, intimate memorial focus

• 2023 (5th Annual): 75+ bikers and supporters

• 2024 (6th Annual): Continued growth with participants from out of state

• 2025 (7th Annual): Largest gathering yet, with the U.S. Veterans MC national president attending

Funds raised have supported practical needs such as building roofs for at-risk veterans and connecting individuals with mental health resources. The ride continues to highlight the ongoing crisis — an average of 22 veteran suicides per day nationwide — while addressing local challenges like stigma, PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and long VA wait times.

This year’s ride takes place during May as Veteran & Military Month in Alamogordo, complementing other community efforts such as the Otero Arts Veteran Arts Showcase that opened Friday night.

Organizers encourage all who want to show support — whether riding, driving, or cheering from the sidelines — to join. “Join us as we ride with purpose and honor those we’ve lost,” they say.

Mark your calendar and help keep this important tradition growing. For more information, scan the QR code on the official flyer or follow the U.S. Veterans MC New Mexico – Trinity Chapter and Slate Riders on social media.
