Direct Flights from Sierra Blanca Regional to Denver Set to Launch June 25

RUIDOSO, N.M. — The Village of Ruidoso is poised to reconnect with commercial aviation in a meaningful way, as direct flights between Sierra Blanca Regional Airport and Denver International Airport are scheduled to begin June 25, 2026 after village councilors approved an agreement with Contour Airlines at their April 16 meeting.

The new service that is not yet active on their website will mark the first scheduled commercial flights out of Sierra Blanca Regional Airport in more than 15 years. The airport last saw regular commercial service in 2008, when New Mexico Airlines — operating under the Pacific Wings brand — flew routes connecting Ruidoso to regional destinations. Before that, a succession of commuter carriers served the airport with flights to Albuquerque, El Paso, Midland/Odessa, and Dallas/Fort Worth dating back to the mid-1970s.

The Agreement and Funding

The deal is made possible through a $3 million Rural Air Service Enhancement (RASE) grant from the Aviation Division of the New Mexico Department of Transportation, paired with a $300,000 match from the village's lodgers' tax fund — the revenue generated by a 5% tax on lodging stays within Ruidoso. The combined funds will serve as a minimum revenue guarantee to Contour, covering any shortfall between ticket revenues and the airline's operating costs as it works to establish the new route.

The Rural Air Service Enhancement program was created by the Rural Air Service Enhancement Act, which passed the New Mexico Legislature and was signed into law, with the state's Aviation Division administering grants on a competitive basis, weighing factors including demand for service, economic impact on the communities, and the feasibility of the carrier providing the service.

New Mexico has seen more of its cities rejoin the air network than anywhere else in the country, with the RASE program driving that momentum.  The Ruidoso agreement marks Contour's fourth partnership with a New Mexico municipality under the program, with service already available to Taos, Albuquerque, and Carlsbad.

The Aircraft and Schedule

Ben Munson, president of Contour Airlines, told the village council that the airline plans to operate four round-trip flights per week between Ruidoso and Denver International Airport. Contour operates 30-seat Embraer Regional Jet aircraft, offering a premium product that includes a complimentary first checked bag and snack and beverage service on all flights, with leather seating and expanded legroom in every row.

Contour Airlines charters these regional jets through its parent company, Contour Aviation, then resells seats to the public — an arrangement that allows the airline to utilize pilots qualified for charter services and connect small communities to the national air transportation system.

Munson was appointed president of Contour Airlines in January 2025.  He has been at the forefront of the airline's aggressive expansion into the Denver market. Contour launched its inaugural Denver service on April 1, 2025 with year-round flights to both Moab, Utah and Vernal, Utah, before announcing further expansion including new service to Page, Arizona and Taos, New Mexico beginning June 25 and 26 respectively.

Travelers booking the Ruidoso-Denver route will also benefit from interline connectivity. Contour has interline partnerships with Alaska, American, and United Airlines, allowing passengers to book seamless connections to the broader national airline network

What It Means for Ruidoso

Sierra Blanca Regional Airport is a significant facility for its region. Located on the Fort Stanton mesa about 15 nautical miles northeast of Ruidoso's central business district in Lincoln County, the airport sits at an elevation of 6,814 feet above sea level and covers 1,665 acres, with two asphalt runways — the longest stretching 8,120 feet.

Ruidoso is a mountain resort community that draws substantial seasonal tourism for skiing, horse racing at Ruidoso Downs, hiking, and outdoor recreation in the surrounding Lincoln National Forest. Direct air access to Denver — one of the nation's top travel hubs and a gateway to the broader Rocky Mountain West — is expected to make the area more accessible to visitors from across the country who can connect through DEN.

The use of lodgers' tax funds for the airline match underscores how directly the village ties air connectivity to its hospitality economy. Ruidoso's Lodgers' Tax Committee administers the fund with the explicit goal of supporting events and infrastructure that bring visitors to the region and generate overnight hotel stays.

Contour's Growing Footprint

Contour Airlines was established in 2016 by its parent company, Contour Aviation, completing its inaugural flight from Nashville to Tupelo, Mississippi. As of 2024, the airline employs approximately 800 people across its operations.

Contour also has an interline partnership with United Airlines, offering passengers seamless connectivity to the rest of the United network — an arrangement the airline describes as central to its mission of linking small communities to the national air transportation system.

The June 25 launch date positions the new Ruidoso-Denver route to coincide with peak summer travel season — a timely debut for a mountain community banking on renewed air access to drive economic growth.
