ALAMOGORDO, N.M. – March 18, 2026 – New details have emerged regarding the shooting at Holloman Air Force Base that prompted a brief lockdown Tuesday evening, confirming it was a domestic incident involving an active-duty service member and his wife.
According to multiple local sources with knowledge of the investigation, the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on March 17, 2026, in the parking lot of the base Shoppette (convenience store). The female suspect reportedly followed her husband — an active-duty Airman — to the location and attempted to serve him with divorce papers. When he reportedly dismissed her, she opened fire, shooting him multiple times inside a vehicle that was occupied by their children. No injuries were reported to the children.
The woman then fled inside the Shoppette, where she attempted to take her own life. Authorities confirmed she died at the scene. The injured Airman was medically evacuated by air to a hospital in El Paso, Texas, where he remains in critical condition.
The base was immediately placed on lockdown following reports of an active shooter. Holloman Air Force Base security forces responded quickly, securing the scene and lifting the lockdown shortly after 5:30 p.m. once they determined there was no ongoing threat to the installation.
Base spokesman Capt. Daniel Barnhorst told media outlets that one person was killed and another was injured but declined to release additional details, including names, ranks, or confirmation of the Shoppette location, citing the ongoing investigation. A statement from the 49th Wing Public Affairs noted: “Emergency personnel are responding to the situation and there is no threat at this time.”
The Shoppette remains closed until further notice, according to the base’s official Facebook page.
No charges have been publicly announced, as the female suspect is deceased. The investigation is being handled jointly by Holloman security forces and federal authorities. Officials continue to ask the public to refrain from sharing unverified information on social media and to contact the 49th Wing Public Affairs Office at (575) 572-7381 with any relevant details.
This remains a developing story. The Otero County Sheriff’s Office and base officials have not released the names of those involved, pending next-of-kin notification.
