Alamogordo High School Wrestlers Compete at 5A State Championships; Boys Team Places 23rd Amid Strong Field

Alamogordo, NM – February 22, 2026 – The Alamogordo High School wrestling team demonstrated grit and perseverance at the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) 5A State Wrestling Championships held over the weekend in Rio Rancho. The boys’ squad earned a respectable 23rd-place finish in a highly competitive 5A division, while the girls’ representation contributed to the program’s ongoing development. Individual standout performances in challenging brackets highlighted the Tigers’ season of dedication.

The event featured fierce competition across weight classes, with Alamogordo wrestlers securing key victories in consolation rounds against top-tier opponents. “Our athletes gave it their all after months of intense training,” said a parent  following the tournament. 

Boys’ Team Standings (Top 3 per NMAA)

The boys’ 5A division was dominated by northern New Mexico powerhouses, with the following top teams:

1. Cleveland (317 points)

2. Volcano Vista (283.5 points)

3. Las Cruces (151.5 points)

Alamogordo’s 23rd-place result positioned the Tigers among a broad field, reflecting points from resilient individual efforts despite early-round setbacks.

Boys’ Individual Highlights

113 lbs: Fynn Krafka began with a 7-3 decision loss to Alex Norby of La Cueva in championship round one but rebounded in consolations with a 1:51 pin over Hunter Berry of Roswell and a 9-6 decision against Paul Sanchez of Organ Mountain. His tournament concluded with a 4:40 fall loss to Devin Delgarito of Farmington.

120 lbs: AJ Benitez claimed a strong 12-1 major decision over Michael Garcia of Cibola in round one before falling by pin (4:00) to Elias Martinez of Volcano Vista in the quarters. In consolations, he delivered a 19-2 tech fall (2:46) against Andy Porsegue of Hobbs, then exited after a tight 6-3 decision to Jacob Torres of Sandia.

106 lbs: Terrence Armijo dropped his opener by fall (1:03) to Izaiah Trujillo of Atrisco Heritage. He responded with a 3:00 pin over Ryan Wedekind of Las Cruces in consolations before a quick :42 fall loss to Mark Gallegos of Volcano Vista.

126 lbs: Cody Phillips encountered tough draws, losing by fall (1:10) to Elias Martinez of Cleveland in round one and by 16-6 major decision to Dominic Delgado of Organ Mountain in consolations.

Girls’ Team Standings (Top 3 per NMAA)

The girls’ competition combined 4A and 5A schools into a single division, resulting in the following top teams:

1. Cleveland (146 points)

2. Las Cruces (114.5 points)

3. Miyamura (110 points)

Girls’ Individual Performance

140 lbs: Ava Armijo faced formidable opponents, falling by pin (:56) to Natalie Romero of Pojoaque Valley in championship round one and by pin (2:00) to Olivia Ortiz of Belen in consolation round two.
