Alamogordo, NM – Otero County Commissioner Amy Barela (District Two) today officially announced her candidacy for re-election, highlighting a strong record of accomplishments during her first term and outlining her vision for continued progress across the county.

In a statement released to constituents, Commissioner Barela emphasized her commitment to putting residents first and her dedication to fiscal responsibility, public safety, and community development.

“I am proud to announce that I am running for re-election as your District Two Otero County Commissioner,” Barela said. “Over the last year, I have worked tirelessly to put my constituents first, and together we have made meaningful progress. I have accomplished a great deal as your County Commissioner—but there is still more work to be done.”

Among her key achievements, Barela pointed to the successful implementation of tablet-based education programs in the Otero County Jail, which allow inmates to earn workforce credentials, GEDs, and other certifications to improve their chances of employment upon release.

She has consistently opposed tax increases, voting against Gross Receipts Tax (GRT) hikes and advocating for reduced government spending. Barela has also championed broadband expansion in underserved areas, including recent progress in Alamogordo and ongoing efforts to connect communities in Laborcita Canyon, La Luz Canyon, and Cottonwood Canyon.

Other highlights from her first term include securing funding for road improvements in Bent, addressing blighted properties, fighting against a proposed wastewater treatment plant that could harm agriculture and wells, and working to establish a recovery and mental health treatment facility to address crime and reduce recidivism.

Barela has also led initiatives to support volunteer firefighters through free college programs and partnerships, while advocating for increased volunteer numbers to help keep homeowners insurance rates affordable.

“I attend as many community meetings as possible so I know what is happening across District Two,” she added. “Government moves painfully slow—but I move fast and don’t take no as an answer.”

Barela concluded her announcement by calling for continued support from voters.
