Alamogordo, NM — On New York Avenue’s 1200 Block, the holiday season has taken on a new sparkle. The 1200 Block Pop-Up Emporium, running from Black Friday through December 27th is more than a marketplace—it is a living story of Alamogordo’s creative spirit, stitched together by artisans, elders, and visionaries who believe in the power of craft to build community.
The Visionaries
The Emporium is the joint brainchild idea of Joann Scaramella (formerly Joanne Blumenthal) and Cindy Nowaczck of Our Little Country Store, located next door on the 1200 Block across from Wells Fargo.
Joann Scaramella has long been a fixture in Alamogordo’s arts scene. Known for her junk journaling, mixed media art, and jewelry making, she has taught classes at Roadrunner Emporium, spun fibers at Otero Arts, and inspired countless makers at the Farmers Market. Now, she leads the Emporium as both curator and mentor, laying the groundwork for her permanent studio, Jo’s Workshop, opening in January 2026.
Cindy Nowaczck, a former military wife and seasoned entrepreneur, opened Our Little Country Store in 2024 after having a location within Roadrunner Emporium and a prior stand alone store in Alabama. Specializing in primitive and Americana décor, Cindy has built a national following for her tin-punched lanterns and rustic home goods. Together, she and Joann envisioned the Emporium as a seasonal showcase and another positive piece of Alamogordo’s emerging Cultural Arts District.
“We wanted to create a space where every crafter, whether seasoned or just starting out, could share their gifts with the community,” Joann said. “This Emporium is about belonging, creativity, and joy.”
The 1200 Block Pop Up Emporium will have over 18 crafters as a part of its showcase during its limited run. Just a few of those featured include a diverse lineup of artisans, each bringing their own story and craft to the holiday season:
Kristin Fredrick – Lola Zia Designs
A paper crafter for over 20 years, Kristin offers greeting cards, altered notebooks, stocking stuffers, and custom orders. “I love sharing what I make with everyone,” she said.
Gilly – Cheerful Customs
Specializing in laser engraving, sublimation, 3D printing, resin work, and festival gear, Gilly transforms ideas into personalized treasures. “Every design is made with care and precision,” a fan said. “It’s about making something truly one-of-a-kind.”
Aya Hess – Studio Ayalia
Originally from Japan, Aya infuses her work with ‘Japanese Cuteness’—crocheted handbags, stuffed animals, jewelry, and baby bows. She also teaches children’s craft classes. “My mission is to help individuals explore crafts so they can discover their own interests and share their creations with the world,” Aya said.
Maggie McColley – From Land To Sea
A third-generation canner, Maggie crafts jams, jellies, fruit butters, and seasoning rubs inspired by the bold flavors of the Southwest. With her husband Dave, a Navy veteran, Maggie’s work reflects tradition and resilience
Rusty – TradeWinds
Rusty’s polymer clay creations capture the beauty of nature in miniature form. From woodland creatures to forest mushrooms, each hand-sculpted piece brings the outdoors to life.
All We Knead
Born from resilience and faith, Liberty’s bakery offers organic sourdough and seasonal desserts infused with New Mexico flavors like Hatch green chile.
Rosa Miranda Designs
At over 80 years old, Rosa remains a powerhouse of creativity. She continues to hand-sew pot holders, towels, wreaths, and more, embodying the enduring spirit of craftsmanship. “I just keep sewing,” Rosa laughed. “It keeps me young, and it keeps the traditions alive.”
This is just a few of the several artisans to be showcased during December.
A Community Celebration
The 1200 Block Pop Up Emporium is more than a holiday market—it is a gathering place where stories, traditions, and creativity converge. Each vendor brings not only their craft but also their history, weaving together a tapestry of resilience and community pride.

Looking Ahead to 2026
With Joann’s Jo’s Workshop set to open in January 2026 and Cindy’s Our Little Country Store thriving next door, the Pop-Up Emporium is laying the foundation for Alamogordo’s Cultural Arts District and more small business growth. More artisan highlights will be showcased in the coming weeks, ensuring that the holiday season shines with local talent and heartfelt creations.
“This is just the beginning,” Joann reflected. “We’re building something lasting—an arts corridor.”
