NMSP seeks help with a cold case. On July 3, 1989, New Mexico State Police officers discovered the body of a deceased woman at a rest area near Raton, New Mexico. The woman, believed to have been a transient, had no identification, and no missing person reports at the time matched her description. An autopsy later confirmed she died of natural causes.

Despite continued investigative efforts over the past three decades, her identity remains unknown.

Description of 1989 Jane Doe:

• Estimated Age: Approximately 50 years old at the time of passing

• Eyes: Blue

• Hair: Brown, worn in a long braid

• Height: 5'4"

• Weight: 123 lbs.

• Clothing: White shirt and black pants

• Glasses: Distinctive orange, aviator-style glasses

• Miscellaneous: Several bags of personal belongings, a cardboard sign reading “Raton,” and a “Texas Travel Handbook,” suggesting she may have been hitchhiking

The New Mexico State Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying this woman or locating her family.

Along with this release are photographs of personal belongings that were with her at the time of her passing, which we hope may aid in her identification.

If you have any information that could assist in this case, please contact New Mexico State Police Agent Nathaniel Garcia at (505) 425-6771.
