Alamogordo, NM — October 11, 2025 White Sands National Park has announced a partial reopening following a period of restricted access due to safety concerns. Beginning Saturday, October 11 through Friday, October 17, the park will welcome visitors daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Park officials confirmed that the Visitor Center and Western National Parks Store will operate during the full open hours, offering limited services and information to guests. Dunes Drive, the park’s main scenic route, will be accessible only up to mile marker 2.5, terminating at the Dune Life Nature Trail, which remains open alongside the Playa Trail.
However, several popular areas will remain closed to ensure public safety and allow for ongoing maintenance and environmental monitoring. These include:
• Backcountry Camping Loop
• Interdune Boardwalk
• Alkali Flat Trail
Visitors are encouraged to plan accordingly and respect all posted signage and ranger instructions. The partial reopening offers a chance to experience the park’s unique gypsum dunes and wildlife habitats, while full access remains temporarily restricted.
For updates and trail conditions, guests can visit the official White Sands National Park website or contact the Visitor Center directly.
Park officials urge caution and patience as restoration efforts continue.
