On May 31, 2025, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Criminal Investigations Bureau was called to investigate a vehicle theft and shots-fired incident that began in Torrance County and ended in a pursuit and crash in Albuquerque.

At approximately 10:46 a.m., the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office issued a BOLO (Be on the Lookout) following a report of suspicious activity at the Gonzalez Contractors business establishment in Moriarty, NM. Surveillance footage showed two men in a gray Ford pickup truck attempting to access multiple vehicles.

A woman employed by the company and her husband were passing by the business when she noticed the unfamiliar men on the property. As the couple drove onto the premises to investigate, one of the suspects entered a dump truck, where a second suspect was already inside, and fled the scene. A gray Ford pickup, believed to be associated with the suspects, also fled, suggesting the involvement of a third individual.

The couple pursued both vehicles while contacting 911. During the chase, the dump truck came to a stop, blocking the roadway. The two suspects exited the vehicle and fled on foot as one suspect brandished a firearm, and a single gunshot was heard as he threatened the couple.

Around 10:55 a.m., an NMSP officer located a gray Ford pickup matching the BOLO description near NM Highway 333 and Skyline Drive. The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver failed to comply, leading to a pursuit on I-40 westbound. During the chase, the suspects threw metal tools at the officer's patrol unit, shattering his windshield.

The pursuit ended on the westbound off-ramp of I-40 at Exit 167 in Albuquerque when the officer attempted a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver. The suspect vehicle lost control and crashed into two other vehicles: a Hyundai passenger car occupied by a male and female, and a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a male.

The suspects, identified as Miguel Pena-Guardado (driver) and Maclen Suarez-Villalobos (passenger), were taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. The occupants of the Hyundai and the Chevrolet pickup were also taken to a local hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

A third suspect involved in the initial Moriarty incident remains unidentified and at large. Investigators believe this individual may have been dropped off before the pursuit began.

Pena-Guardado and Suarez-Villalobos are currently under law enforcement supervision at the hospital. Following their release, they will be booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center.

Miguel Pena-Guardado is charged with:

• Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (2 counts)

• Burglary of an Automobile (3 counts)

• Unlawful Taking of a Motor Vehicle (1 count)
