On December 14, 2024, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was requested to investigate a homicide in La Luz. Investigators learned that at around 8:48 p.m., New Mexico State Police officers were dispatched to 85 Appler Road in reference to a breaking and entering call where a shot had been fired by the homeowner.

The initial investigation indicates the homeowner, 39, his wife, 38, and their three small children were in the residence when Lucas Eli Moore, 45, of La Luz, began banging on the door. Moore then broke open the door and entered the home. The armed homeowner repeatedly told Moore to leave.

Moore proceeded to the kitchen, which was directly down the hall from the children's bedrooms where they were sleeping. After repeated attempts to get Moore to leave, Moore attempted to strike the homeowner. The homeowner fired at least one round from his handgun striking Moore, who fell to the floor in the kitchen.

The homeowner called 911 and advised them of the incident, prompting dispatch to request law enforcement and emergency medical services respond to the scene. Upon arrival of the ambulance, Moore was pronounced deceased in the kitchen. The homeowner, his wife, and children were not injured. The children were asleep in their rooms and did not witness the incident.

The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is investigating the incident. At this time, no charges have been filed against the homeowner. Upon completion of the investigation, the case file will be submitted to the district attorney’s office for review.
