On July 26, 2025, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving New Mexico State Police (NMSP).

Investigators learned that at approximately 1:00 p.m., the Santa Fe Police Department (SFPD) was dispatched to 18A Reata Road for a welfare check. The calling party requested a welfare check on her daughter, who she believed was being physically assaulted by her boyfriend, Paul Gallegos (38).

Upon arrival, SFPD officers made contact with the daughter, who exited a recreational vehicle (RV) on the property through a window. Despite visible injuries including facial swelling and scratches, she denied any domestic abuse had occurred.

While officers were speaking with her, they heard a gunshot coming from inside the RV. SFPD officers then requested assistance from the New Mexico State Police.

At approximately 1:25 p.m., NMSP officers arrived on scene and established a perimeter around the RV. As verbal commands were being issued for Gallegos to exit, an NMSP officer observed what appeared to be the barrel of a firearm emerging from one of the RV’s windows. Moments later, gunfire was reported, and at least one NMSP officer discharged their duty weapon in response.

After shots were fired, Gallegos exited the RV. Gallegos was taken into custody with the assistance of a SFPD K-9 unit. Medical aid was rendered on scene before Gallegos was transported to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Through interviews, investigators learned Gallegos and his girlfriend had been arguing earlier that day. Gallegos admitted that the dispute became physical. He also admitted to firing the gun inside the RV.

No officers were injured during this incident.

Gallegos is charged with the following:

• Aggravated Assault upon a peace officer (X2)

• Battery against a household member

• Possession of a firearm or destructive device by a felon

The identity of the NMSP officer will not be released until interviews are completed. The officer has been placed on standard administrative leave. New Mexico State Police act solely as factfinders in their investigation and conduct an unbiased and impartial investigation. In officer involved shootings, NMSP thoroughly documents the scene, collects evidence, and interviews officers, subjects, and witnesses.

In turn, NMSP compiles facts as detailed as possible and forwards all reports to the appropriate district attorney for their review. The New Mexico State Police does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified, this determination rests solely with the district attorney’s office.
