The New Mexico State Police are involved in an investigation into the death of an individual involved in an incident involving the Alamogordo Police Department that began at Walgreens near 10th and White Sands Blvd. in Alamogordo, New Mexico over the weekend.

Social media has been abuzz in speculation around the incident over the weekend. A post on social media was made asking for witnesses of the issue to step forward.

The Alamogordo Police Department released the following statement:

On the afternoon of March 22, 2024, at approximately 1500 hours, Alamogordo Police Department Officers responded to a disturbance call at Walgreens (955 N. White Sands). Upon arrival, officers encountered a scene where a male individual, displaying signs of possible drug influence, had reportedly assaulted both store employees and customers.

Despite attempts by law enforcement to engage with the individual, he evaded initial contact and fled on foot. A struggle between the officer and the male individual ensued. A bystander intervened and took the individual to the ground without any prompting from law enforcement. A struggle followed to subdue the combative individual, necessitating the use of a taser in an effort to regain control. After successfully restraining the individual, officers observed a concerning change in his condition. Despite still breathing, the individual became unresponsive, prompting officers to swiftly administer naloxone in suspicion of a potential overdose. Unfortunately, this intervention proved ineffective, leading officers to initiate immediate life-saving measures while summoning emergency medical services.

Tragically, despite the valiant efforts of all involved, the individual succumbed to his condition. During the ordeal, officers sustained minor injuries. The investigation into the incident has been assumed by the New Mexico State Police, while the Alamogordo Police Department will conduct a separate administrative review.”
