The 2023 track and field state championships concluded on Saturday for classes 4A and 5A.

In 5A, La Cueva took home its first girls team championship since 2019, grinding out 76 points to best 2nd place Alamogordo (65.5) and Hobbs (64) in  third place.. Head coach Jim Ciccarello noted Friday’s 4×800 relay, a tight second-place finish, “jump-started” his team into action for the rest of the weekend.

“Then the kids were willing to fight hard to try and get points,” he said. “Every kid that ran, jumped or threw was trying to get a point or two points for this team.”

The Alamogordo Tiger girl’s entry had all eyes from the state on them after a season of continuous wins. The Alamogordo Girls finished 2nd (65.50 points) and the Boys were 12th (17.50 points) at the 5A State Championships.

Congratulations to the Alamogordo Lady Tigers on bringing home the Red Trophy, Runners-Up for 2023!

    4A Highlights…

They’re the first school to achieve the feat since Cleveland’s boys and girls did the same from 2015-17.

Los Alamos’ girls, by and large the state’s best team in any classification this season according to most experienced coaches and experts, more than looked the part with a final point total of 176.50.
