Commentary: New York Avenue Momentum and Change…

New York Avenue and rumors.

To clarify to those spreading rumors that the momentum on New York Avenue is halted due to the listing of some key properties listed as for sale.

Let’s squelch a few rumors.

The property owners of several New York Avenue properties have made the decision to sell! That does NOT mean momentum is lost!

That means priorities have changed for a property owning couple that wants to take more time for themselves, their health and their family - the important things in life!

What’s that mean to the vision of revitalization and a cultural arts community and district?

It means some of the characters facilitating that vision may change, but the vision is already moving forward and will continue to move forward due to a passionate desire and a seed that has been planted and a vision of a vibrant New York Avenue.

The task force led by Alamogordo MainStreet and the merchants is continuing a path forward with the state for the designation of a cultural arts district. That work continues.

The investment by the state of $1.9 Million for street, sidewalk and cityscape improvements is secured and the city is working toward groundbreaking of those improvements in the fall. That work continues.

The sale of certain properties means that new blood and new capital will pour into the district with a renewed passion and that is not a bad thing.

Passion, enthusiasm and change are inevitable and part of any transformation.

The 800 and 900 Blocks of New York Avenue will evolve this year with significant changes for the better.

The 1200 block is transitioning, soon there will be a new Art Gallery at 1207 New York Avenue. 1209 New York will soon see a major facelift and will house KALHRadio.org’s New Broadcast Studio and the new Studio Q Art Gallery.

So yes, change is happening and a few familiar faces are stepping back to a less visible role, but momentum is NOT lost.

In fact visible changes that the public will see are just beginning to gain speed. The characters onboard the bus driving change will have new faces joining the ride. New blood keeps ideas fresh and vibrant.

The merchants, residents and artisans of New York Avenue thank everyone for the support to date. We look forward to the successes ahead, and to the public at large joining the ride, as we evolve into a city center we can all be proud of. Hold on, keep and eye on more events, announcements and changes and yes we remain Committed and “Alamogordo Proud!”
