In Memory of Betty Jean Vreeke-Skidmore

Betty Jean Vreeke-Skidmore, 91, of Alamogordo, New Mexico, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on August 13, 2026. Born November 23, 1934, in Lapeer, Michigan, she was the daughter of Hungarian immigrants John and Lydia Nagy.

Betty was predeceased by her parents; twelve brothers and sisters; and her husbands, Wayne Caldwell, Lynn Vreeke, and Bacil Skidmore. She is survived by eight stepdaughters, one stepson, one legally adopted son, numerous grandchildren, great‑grandchildren, and one great‑great‑grandchild, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Betty became a resident of Alamogordo in 1968 after traveling extensively throughout the United States and abroad. She worked in several positions over the years, including as a teller at Security Bank & Trust and as a cashier at Dill’s Meat Market, where she met her second husband, Lynn Vreeke. Later, becoming the night clerk at at the former Days Inn. During her marriage to Lynn, she served as pianist, treasurer, and board member of Eternity Baptist Church, contributing the remaining funds needed to complete the church building now located at 1205 25th Street. After Lynn’s passing, she later married Bacil Skidmore, a retired Army veteran.

In her senior years, Betty divided her time between Florida in the winter and Alamogordo in the summer, continuing her lifelong love of travel and adventure.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 18, at Scenic Chapel in Alamogordo. She will be laid to rest beside her second husband, Lynn Vreeke, at Monte Vista Cemetery, 1590 E. 1st Street, Alamogordo,NM. Pastor Fred McCloskey, of Eternity Baptist Church, will officiated the graveside service.

Betty lived a full, adventurous, and faith‑centered life. Her legacy endures in the many lives she touched.
