In Memory of Colin F. N. Irving

Colin F. N. Irving, age 100, passed away January 10, 2025, in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by family. He was born October 26, 1924, in Brookline, Massachusetts to Dr. Frederick C. Irving and Mary Chapman Irving. He was predeceased by sisters, Frances Haskell, Mary Irving, and Rebecca Irving; brother, Frederick C. Irving, Jr. and by his wife of sixty-two years, Frances Winslow Irving. He is survived by four children: John W. Irving of Toronto, Canada; Pamela N. Irving and Sara C. Irving of Alamogordo, New Mexico; and Steven C. Irving of Venus, Florida. He leaves three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He attended Roxbury Latin School, Phillips Exeter Academy, and graduated from Harvard University with a degree Cum Laude in Slavic Languages and Literature. He received an M.A. from Harvard in History.

In World War II he served in the Army Air Force as a cryptographic specialist with the 15th Air Force in Italy. He taught History at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire for forty years, serving the last twenty of them also as the Academy’s Treasurer. He served as Treasurer of the Exeter Hospital, a term as President of the Association of Business Officers of Preparatory Schools, and as President of the Independent School Association of Northern New England.
