Alamogordo, NM — Otero Arts Inc invites the community to a special free screening of the acclaimed Exhibition on Screen documentary Frida: The Making of an Icon on Tuesday, June 17, at 5:30 PM at Otero Artspace, located at 1118 Indiana Ave (at 12th and Indiana) in Alamogordo.

This event offers local art enthusiasts and those curious about one of the 20th century’s most compelling artists an opportunity to dive deep into the life and work of Frida Kahlo. Admission is free, though donations to support Otero Arts Inc’s programming are gratefully accepted.

Who Was Frida Kahlo?

Everyone knows her face — the bold unibrow, vibrant floral crowns, and colorful traditional attire — but who was the woman behind the icon? The documentary takes viewers on an intimate journey through Kahlo’s rebellious, passionate, and often turbulent life. From her childhood polio and devastating bus accident to her complex marriage with Diego Rivera and her emergence as a groundbreaking artist, the film explores the resilience, pain, and unmatched lust for life that fueled her creativity.

Frida Kahlo has become a global phenomenon and is arguably the world’s most beloved female artist. Her dreamlike painting El sueño (La cama) recently sold for $54.7 million, setting a new record for the most expensive work by a female artist at auction.

About the Film

Frida: The Making of an Icon is an award-winning Exhibition on Screen production directed by Ali Ray and produced by Phil Grabsky. Originally released during the pandemic, the film has returned by popular demand with exciting new footage from the blockbuster transatlantic exhibition “Frida: The Making of an Icon” at Tate Modern and MFA Houston.

The documentary features collaboration with world experts and people who knew Kahlo personally. It examines her transformation into a global cultural brand and how a new generation of artists and activists — including Mary McCartney, Amalia Mesa-Bains, and Yasumasa Morimura — continue to draw inspiration from her legacy.

Using Kahlo’s own letters as a guide, the film provides privileged access to her key works, home, and studio. Viewers gain insight into the symbolism within her art and the sources of her feverish creativity. High-quality visuals and expert interviews create a rich, emotional experience that brings her world to life.

The film also explores “Fridamania” — the commercialization of her image, style, and persona — offering audiences a front-row seat to this cultural phenomenon.
