When I start to think about comic books during the Halloween season, I inevitably end up with one character in mind… Hallow’s Eve! She embodies the look and power set that most closely reminds me of the spooky season.
Sure, there are plenty of comic book characters inspired by myths, monsters, and supernatural forces. Few of those made Halloween masks their signature weapon. From her look to her power/skill set, Hallow’s Eve gives off the most Halloweenish vibes.
Elizabeth Tyne aka Janine Godbe aka Hallow’s Eve made her first appearance in Spider-man: The Lost Years #1 as the girlfriend of Ben Reilly. Every Spider-man fan should recognize the Ben Reilly name. If you don’t… Google it.
Hallow’s Eve has been labelled a villain and/or an anti-hero. Some readers even say she is just someone trying to reclaim control of her life. Honestly, I believe the character exists in the grey area between all three.
Hallow’s Eve was born Elizabeth Tyne. She killed her abusive father in self-defense. She panicked and went on the run and changed her name to Janine Godbe. While on the run, she met Ben Reilly and the two started a relationship.
It was during her relationship with Reilly that she encountered the Goblin Queen, Madelyne Pryor, the ruler of Limbo. Godbe tells Pryor about her insecurities and desire to support Reilly. Pryor uses S'ym's magic to empower Godbe, transforming her into Hallows' Eve. Godbe gained the ability to manifest masks with different abilities.
Who Is Janine Godbe?
Janine Godbe was born Elizabeth Tyne. Her father physically and sexually abused her all throughout her childhood. When she was 17 all those years of abuse finally pushed her to her breaking point. Tyne killed her father in self-defense.
Afraid of the consequences of killing her father, she panicked and went on the run. She changed her name to Janine Godbe and attempted to build a new life away from her past. Godbe struggled constantly with the fact she had killed someone, even if it was justified.
Ben Reilly was dealing with a different identity and issues in his past when he met Godbe. They were both living under assumed identities that concealed painful truths about their past. They both believed their past would make them unworthy of love. They were both damaged people who found acceptance in each other even though they struggled to accept themselves.
The Birth of Hallow’s Eve
During her time with Reilly, Godbe does what she can to support him. She allies with The Goblin Queen, Madelyn Pryor, ruler of Limbo. Godbe tells Pryor of her desire to support Reilly and her doubts of being able to so.
Pryor uses S’ym’s magic to transform her into Hallow’s Eve. Part of that transformation gave Godbe the ability to manifest masks with different abilities. She is also immune to Limbo based magic because of the transformation.
Godbe would later join the Blood Hunters, a supernatural crime fighting team. Their objective is to hunt down the vampires that remain after the vampire invasion. Their main antagonist is a superpowered vampire group called the Bloodcoven.
The Power of the Masks: Halloween with a Marvel Twist
Hallow’s Eve’s masks are enchanted and powered by chaos magic from Limbo. Each mask gives her a different ability, transformation, or disguise. She will be able to morph her powers and abilities according to which mask she is wearing. Oh, and she can change the masks mid-fight.
Some of the masks that have been revealed on the comic page are Frankenstein’s Monster (Strength & Power), Human Fly (Insect abilities, flight, acid projection), Werewolf (turns her into a werewolf), Ghost (invisibility & intangibility), Vampire (Supernatural abilities, flight, enhanced senses), Black Cat (Cat like creature with agility), Mummy (Mummy form where she can manipulate her wrappings), Witch (magical abilities), Captain America (Physical abilities, combat, shield), Hulk (tremendous strength and large physique), Spider-man (web-slinging, wall crawling), Wasp (flight, size manipulation, energy projection), Kaiju (transform into a large kaiju), Slasher (abilities of horror movie slasher), Police Officer (disguise as police officer), Model (disguise as a supermodel), and Gorilla (gorilla form with enhanced strength).
The problem with the masks being magically driven is everyone wants them. She is constantly targeted by those who want to steal the masks for themselves.
From Spider-Man Supporting Character to Solo Star
Godbe debuted in Spider-man: The Lost Years #1. She started off as Ben Reilly’s girlfriend, but she quickly became much more than that over the course of their relationship. Her first appearance as Hallow’s Eve was in Amazing Spider-man #14. This was part of the Dark Web crossover that helped establish her as a superpowered character rather than just Reilly’s girlfriend.
During the Dark Web events, Godbe helps the Goblin Queen in their campaign of revenge against Spider-man and the X-men. She joins other demons from Limbo in attacking New York. The attack ultimately fails, but it cements Godbe’s place as a force to be reckoned with in the Marvel universe.
Where Should New Readers Start?
If you are interested in catching up on this spooky themed character in time for Halloween, here is my suggested reading order:
Spider-man: The Lost Years #1 (1995) – Tyne/Godbe’s origin in Marvel Comics
Amazing Spider-man #14 (2022) – Godbe’s debut as Hallow’s Eve
Dark Web series (2022-2023) – Crossover that established Hallow’s Eve powers
Hallow’s Eve #1-5 (2023) – First solo miniseries
Hallow’s Eve: The Big Night (2023) – Follow up one shot
Conclusion
Hallow’s Eve is the perfect Halloween themed character. Her powers are derived from wearing magically enhanced masks. Those masks give her abilities associated with the subject of the mask. Putting on a mask and pretending to be someone/something else is the very essence of Halloween.
I would like to see Marvel bring Hallow’s Eve back into regular rotation. Even if she is just a minor character in a storyline. She would be great for a special Halloween season crossover series.
