Alamogordo, NM — May 25, 2026

Fellow Alamogordans, Tularosa, Cloudcroft, Timberon, Chaparral and Mescalero Apache families, and all who call this high desert home — today, on this sacred Memorial Day 2026, we pause not for barbecues or sales, but to bow our heads and lift our hearts in gratitude for the ultimate price paid by our brothers and sisters in uniform.

As a journalist who has walked these streets, reported on our military families, and witnessed the unbreakable bond between Alamogordo and Holloman Air Force Base, I stand before you today as a passionate advocate: We must never forget. Their sacrifice is the very foundation of the freedom we cherish every single day.

VFW Post 7686’s Powerful Tribute

This past Saturday, May 23, our local heroes at VFW Post 7686 (Alamogordo/Tularosa) rose before dawn to place thousands of American flags at veterans’ graves across Monte Vista Cemetery and other sacred grounds. What a breathtaking sight it must have been — rows of red, white, and blue waving in the desert breeze, each flag a silent testament to a life given for this nation.

Those flags will stand proudly through today as a solemn tribute. They will be removed this evening at 5 p.m. by the dedicated VFW members and volunteers. If you haven’t yet walked among them, make time today. Feel the weight of that honor. To every VFW 7686 comrade — Anthony Lucero and I salute you. Your work keeps their memory alive in our community.

Tularosa Veterans Park Service – Join Us in Remembrance

This morning at 11:00 AM, the Village of Tularosa hosts its annual Memorial Day Ceremony of Remembrance at Tularosa Veterans Park, 1050 S. Bookout Road (across from Lowe’s Market). This hallowed ground serves as a focal point for our shared grief and gratitude. Expect heartfelt speeches, color guards, patriotic music, and moments of silence that cut straight to the soul. All are invited — bring your family, your neighbors, and your respect.

These local observances matter deeply. They connect us to something greater than ourselves.

Alamogordo’s Military Heartbeat and Lives Lost

Alamogordo is not just near Holloman Air Force Base — we are a military community. The 49th Wing and the warriors who train here defend our skies and support global missions. But with that pride comes profound loss. We have sent sons and daughters into harm’s way, and some have not returned. Their names are etched forever in our hearts and on local memorials.

Visit the Alamogordo Airborne Memorial Monument (also known locally in connection with our military memorial efforts) at the park near North White Sands Boulevard and 10th Street. Here, names of the fallen — especially those tied to airborne and air power traditions — stand as a permanent reminder. Additional tributes, like the Veterans’ Memorial Plaque and growing monuments honoring all branches, underscore why our town feels every deployment, every loss, so personally.

Why 2026 Holds Special Significance

This Memorial Day 2026 carries extra weight. With ongoing global tensions, the continued mission at Holloman, and the enduring legacy of conflicts past and present, our community feels the call to service more urgently than ever. In Alamogordo and beyond, we see the direct human cost: Gold Star families in our neighborhoods, children growing up without a parent, and veterans carrying invisible wounds.

Yet we also see resilience — the way our town rallies, the way Holloman airmen and local veterans stand shoulder to shoulder, and the way everyday citizens like you choose remembrance over indifference. This year reminds us that freedom isn’t free, and vigilance is a shared duty.

From the White Sands Missile Range to the skies above, Alamogordo’s ties to national defense make our observance not just local, but vital to the fabric of America.

To every fallen hero from Alamogordo and Otero County: Your watch is over, but ours continues. We honor you by living lives worthy of your sacrifice — with courage, community, and unyielding patriotism.

To all Gold Star families, active duty, veterans, and their loved ones: Thank you. We see you. We remember.

Lest we forget.
